Question about 1995 Mercury Cougar

1 Answer

Have been having issues for a month or so with 95 Cougar not starting on first try...double-check that car is in park, etc....eventually will start. Yesterday ignition made a 'pop' then started, but now the tumbler turns back and forth and the key can be removed and the car continues to run. Just had a locksmith here to replace and same, what should be checked next?

Sounds like there is a relay for ignition stuck on. As I'm unfamiliar with your particular car, I'm sorry that I can't help further. It is possible that the relay had a poor contact, hence not starting, then it has welded itself together due to the poor contact, hence not switching ignition off...hope this helps

I got a 95 merc cougar starts and runs good when driving down the road it will sputter and make a loke a vibration noise the check engine light then begans to flash don't no we're to start

get the OBD I codes read , as could give the sensor/switch at fault , if any , although not as accurate as OBDII , also try a fuel addative , get one that covers the catalytic convertor as well as the valves , injectors etc as just may be a build up of deposits or blockage in injector , keep me posted if you wish

95 cougar stuck in park with no brake lights.already check the fuses replaced brake light switch, will not start from neutral.

Still no brake lights would indicate a bad wire. Check for power at the brake switch, repair the wire, they usually break close to the plug. This will get back the lights and shifter. The no start would be the neutral safety switch on the transmission. Usually the switch is under the shifter cable. Some have a separate switch.

Your starter does not actually start your car. It's only job is to turn the engine so it can start. (actually replaces the crank people used to need to put into the front of the car and physically crank (turn) the engine...hence the term "cranking")
The two most common causes of the problem you are having is either the crank position sensor or fuel pump has failed. Easy way to determine if the pump is bad is to listen to the gas tank when you turn the key to the "on" position...You should be able to hear it. CPS needs to be checked with a digital ohmmeter Best instructions for electrical testing can be found in chilton manuals available in most large parts stores. Haynes is somewhat useful but a bit too basic for any real electrical diagnosis. All sensors are expensive (min of $90 each) so testing is important so you don't end up throwing $ at it with no results.

Car is trying to crank over, will not take a jump. 2000 Cougar

I had the same problem in my 02 Eurospec XR. The first aspect of it was my coil pack. replaced coil pack and it had a rough idle. The second issue was plug fouling. Replaced with Bosch double platinum and hasn't had an issue for 6 months now.
