If it does it no matter where you fill up or how you fill up you have a blockage. If you have teenagers or just teenagers acting silly in your area this could be just about anything from a golf ball to a foam animal available at almost any toy store. DON"T try to push it through to the tank because that will cause more problems. If it only happens are 1 or 2 stations and never from a can then the pumps you are using are just pushing it faster than it can get into the tank. I have seen this problem at a few stations that advertise the 3 or 5 minute fill ups because they have increased the fuel flow.

I used to have the same problem with one of my older ford trucks. what happens is because the gas is filling up the tube so quick, it forms a reverse vacume and causes all the gas to come back at you. all i used to do is when i went to get gas i would have to not pull the lever on the gas pump as hard (bout half way) and it would take the gas very nicely.

Can only pump fuel very slowly into my 2003 2.7 litre Kia optima. Why, and how to fix?

Check that the flap/valve that moves aside when you insert the fuel nozzle is moving fully. Also check the rubber tube on inside of the fuel filler cap to the tank is ok .. and often, there may be a thinner tube that acts as a vent... check the vent tube (if fitted).

When you fill your car with fuel the back pressure from the vehicle fuel tank causes the fuel nozzle to cut out and stop delivering. This is just a safety feature. Every fuel nozzle in the world is the same..

You don't have a big problem. Next time you refill with fuel try delivering in short 'spurts' .. pull the trigger for a few seconds and then release .. pull again ... Let the pressure in the tank drop between spurts. Don't shove the nozzle into the fuel filler and try and blast gallon after gallon into the tank.

I'm in the UK. I have a 1998 Jeep. Every time I fill it with gas it takes a while and my wife phones the police to report me missing from home... You don't have a problem. Fill it with spurts..

When I try to put gas in the tank it will only take 0.44 gallons and then the pump just shuts off and no more gas can be put in the tank

Usually a sign of a vent problem with the tank, or a blockage in the filler tube for the tank. The tube has a small pipe that is supposed to equalize pressure inside the tank as you fill it.
Someone may have to remove the filler pipe and check for restrictions.

FUEL BACKS UP AND SPILLS ON THE GROUND ON 04 KIA OPTIMA

There are no valves causing your problem. You have purely a plumbing isue. Some fuel stations pump fuel faster then the size and orientation of your filler tube will take. Don't be in such a rush when putting your 15 gallons in run the fuel nozel on slow.

MY 2002 KIA SPORTAGE GAS FILL TUBE TAKES GAS VERY SLOWLY OR BACKS UP SHUTTING OFF PUMP

The vent tube on the filler neck is probably clogged or pinched somewhere. If you get under the car and look at the filler neck you should see another tube coming from it... that's the vent tube. Either try getting a piece of wire through it or you might be able to blow compressed air into the tank. One of those methods should clear the blockage.

Many vehicles have a rubber hose between the filler tube on the body and the gas tank. Check that it's not collapsed or that something maybe got in there and squeezed it partially shut. The rubber tube may need replaced. Please rate this answer, thanks.

Diesal gas in the tank

You must drain all the diesel fuel out of the tank and purge the fuel lines as well or it will not start.

Filling with gas

There is a fuel tank vent tube that runs down the filler tube to let the air out of the tank as you fill it, these tubes get kinked, replace the tube, this is part of the filler neck assembly so the whole thing must be changed out.

Sounds like you should be checking the vent tube/hose, that runs along side your filler pipe, it may be plugged or kinked.
