Key Turns....Click and No start Intermittent

This has been an ongoing issue for me, and of course, can never be repeated by any gargage. It has left me stranded overnight on 2 occaions. I have replaced the starter and battery as well as the starter relay. It still keeps happening in eaxactly the same way. Turn the key and click....maybe if it is turned 100 times fast it will start but also maybe not. I really like my Commander but this is a pretty fundamental issue about reliability.....

I have a new battery and new starter both and it still does it. One suggestion was to replace the starter relay under the hood relay/fuse panel cover. It is interchangeable with another relay...the horn one I believe and it has been suggested that when it happens nI sway them out. Instead I purchased a new starter relay for $12 and when it happens next I will try that. The one thing I do know is that diconnecting and then reconnecting the battery does not change anything when this happens.

I have exactly the same issue, I have to do it quickly, almost "shocking" the ignition so it starts. I changed the battery and its still doing it, I gues its the ignition per se or maybe the starter engine.

I have to ask, how long since a tune-up?
Are there any applicable trouble codes?
I saw what you replaced, didn't see any testing? With intermittent issues, have to do testing when problem is ongoing. When problem is ongoing, if it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Also check fuel injector pulse.

there is a shift indicator switch at the base of the shifter, constant moving back and forth can cause wires to break, have them check it out

Having an intermittent problem with my girlfriends 05 Tribute where it just won't start. The battery turns on but there is no click and nothing from the ignition. At first I had it looked at and w

get it properly diagnosed at a reputable repair shop. does the dash stay lit when ur cranking?(turning the key all the way trying to start it) does the security light stay on or flash? im thinking a security problem. its not reading the key right possibly. not uncommon now for this to happen to newer cars.

2000 mercury grand marquis 4.6 Intermittent problem. 35,000. miles. Problem engine died several times wile driving. Also after car is parked from a drive will not start. Found that the fuel pump is not...

I'd have to test when problem is ongoing. When you first turn on key, no crank, you should hear the pump run for a few seconds then stop. For initial prime, the computer doesn't need rpm signal. Engine cranking, the computer needs to see rpm signal or it won't ground the fuel pump relay. W/o rpm signal, no spark at the plugs and no fuel injector pulse. I know your talking about fuel, but, when problem is ongoing, check spark and fuel injector pulse, engine cranking.
Intermittent problems are a pain, have to test when problem is ongoing.

Intermittent non-starting caused by high pitched whirring when key turned in ignition

The problem you are experiencing is one of two possiblilties. First, the bendix is weak in the starter. Best course of action is to replace the starter. When you pull the starter out, use a pry bar or screwdriver to rotate the flywheel an inspect the meshing teeth of the flywheel. If there is a section that has worn teeth then the flywheel needs to be replaced.

Ford focus 1.8 1999 engine turns over but won't start

you may not have enough fuel presur yet. try this -
turn key to on, listen for fuel pump noise (humming) for about 5 seconds. If no hum, you have a problem. If it hums, good. Now, turn key off for 30 seconds and turn key to "on" again. Repeat 5 times. Then try to start car.

The fel pump does run in "start" mode continually.

Starting problems

I had the same problem. Turned out to be the clutch interlock switch mounted under the clutch pedal. A combination of the clutch pedal and switch mount being there for 15 years and had bent just a little not allowing the switch to be fully depressed and my floormats getting behind the clutch pedal not allowing the pedal to push the switch all the way. You can press the switch by hand and turn the key (making sure the truckicon1.png is in neutral of course). If it starts reliably every time you found the problem. I adjusted the switch out by disconnecting the wire to the switch and loosening the 14mm nut behind the switch and turning the switch out a couple of turns. When moved out a bit and keeping the floormat from behind the clutch pedal, voila, starts every time. This fix came after a new battery, new starter, new battery cables and still the intermittent no crank was present. Start with the cheap/free stuff first and move on from there if needed :-)
