06 Saturn Ion, starter disengages

First off, I know the starter is good. When this happens, the dash shows a icon of a car with a padlock over it. After many times of arming and disarming the alarm it finally started. I don't have a owners manual so I don't even know what this icon means. Could this mean the battery in the remote keychange is going bad or something on the car. Thanks to anyone who can help me......

The car with a padlock symbol means security system,,,you either have a bad ignition switch causing this issue and or a passlock housing,,,sounds like a normal problem,,,when the ignition switch/passlock housing goes bad it can work sometimes and not others,but it will cuase the car not to start,, i bet there are codes stored in the computer,,you are gonna need to take it to the dealer,,

After you disconnect the battery, you have to reset the security system. The immobilizer is stopping the car from starting.

Check to make sure your battery is good. The sound you are probably hearing is the starter cylinoid. You can take it to a parts store (like auto zone) and they will check it for you free of charge.

Saturn ion 2006 shuts off immediately after starting
This sounds like a reset problem. Possibly the ignition interlock ( Just another word for Factory reset code needed for your computer.) Usually the little padlock symbol will be on in dash. Removal of the battery could and usually will fool the computer into thinking the car is being hot wired into starting.

if noise is only when starting, consider replacing the starter. the mounting bolts could have some loose, or the clutch which disengages the starter gear is not retracting the gear. either situation could cause a loud noise of the starter gear clattering with the ring gear.

Good idea to have the 2006 ION scanned by a technician with their equipment to pinpoint the problem.

I would not say anything else until more data is gathered.

you need to first make sure the battery has a good charge on it and (smile there is gas in the car) and you may have a freeze gas line put some STP gas treatment in the gas tank if it cold where you live give these websites a try www.alldatadiy.com and www.autozone.com if all fails stop by your local library and get your hands on a Haynes auto repair manual for your car wish you the best of luck Michigan Man.
