Question about Toyota Matrix

We just had complete brake rebuild front and rear. the car seems to be stopping okay but at a stand still i can put the pedal down to about 2 inches from the floor without much effort. Even when new the pedal was a little soft and we have had no problems. this, however, seems like excessive play.

It is excessive. The REAR brakes need to be adjusted to a tighter point. The parking brake must also be adjusted. Have the brake shop adjust them.

Be aware that your vehicle may "fish tail" on wet streets. Have them adjusted.

I have changed the rear rotors and brake pads, bled the brakes after putting itall back together. Seemed to have brakes but then shortly thereafter they are like a sponge. Last time I tried bleeding them...


Hi, bleeding your rear brakes with engine running, you should get enough pressure out of the lines to squirt 3-4 feet. In other words, good pressure. If all you get is a trickle, you probably have a bad master cylinder. Just because its full of fluid, does not mean the seals arent shot. If you have bled them in order, left rear,right rear,left front,right fornt and have bled them enough to get fresh fluid out of each one without achieving good solid pressure at all wheels, replace your master cylinder. There is a proportioning valve, but usually it will affect only one wheel when going out, usually the left rear.
Brake pedal height comes from the rear brakes, so if you have bad pressure there, you will never get a good pedal. Eventually with a bad master, your brakes will go completly out..Mike

e-brake pedal should go farther- is either out of adjustment or cable frozen- secondly sounds like only front brakes receiving enough pressure to "activate" properly- bleed all four brakes starting rear pass,then rear drive ,then front pass, then front drive- use plenty of fluid- bleed till fluid is clean without bubbles- will that long at first- this will insure not bubbles and no moisture- if a pro valve dies,you would have more problems- pedal would be really soft,would have both a brake light and abs warning lights

I put 2 front brakes shoes on my 1995 Nissan Maxima,what is the correct way to bleed my brakes?Is their any order that i need to follow?


Did you open the bleeder screws at all. If not you may not need to bleed the brakes just pump the pedal to bring the caliper pistons out and your pedal should feel fine. If you just want to blled anyways open all your bleeder srews and as the fluid level in your brake master cylider goes down refill with new dot 3 brake fluid (do not alow the master cylider to drain completely). Close bleeders when you get clean fluid through. Start at passenger rear corner and have a buddy press the brake pedal down. open bleeder, close bleeder after squirt of fluid then have buddy release pedal. Do this a couple of time per corner. Go from pass rear to drivers rear then pass. front ending with driver front. You just flushed your brake fluid. Hope this helps.

The rear brakes on the Spectra will always engage less than the front brakes. If you have to push hard on the brake pedal then you probably have air in the brake lines from the last brake pad replacement. The brakes need to be bled with this method: Use 1/8 inch 2 foot long hose from parts store and attach from bleeder valve ball on the brake caliper to a bottle partially filled with brake fluid. End of hose should be submerged in bottle. With second person holding brake pedal to floor, slowly turn bleeder valve counter clockwise (loosen tiny bit) with wrench and watch for dirty brake fluid to create bubbles in the bottle. When bubbles start, quickly tighten bleeder valve back to tight. Second person lifts foot while valve is tight and then pushes pedal to floor again and THEN you again open bleeder valve slowly turning counter clockwise and watch for bubbles. Repeat until no more bubbles can be created in the bottle where the hose is submerged. Move to next caliper and repeat. For a firm brake pedal you will need to repeat this on all four calipers. My 2003 Kia's rear brake pads "fell apart" and never wore out in 190000 miles because they do not get used. The braking power is primarily in the front disk brakes on this model. Removing and replacing the rear drum brake linings did not even require me to bleed the brake lines. They weren't that tight before or after the replacement procedure.

Hard to push brake pedal down to stop.


1. Check brake fluid level and look for leaks in the brake lines and at the calipers.
2. Bleed the brake fluid completely and replace with fresh fluid (google search: how to bleed brakes). Then bleed air by having someone press the brake pedal 4-5 times, then press and hold while you open the bleed valve and close when fluid streams out. start with the rear wheel (if 4wheel disc brakes) then move to the front.
3. Replace Master Cylinder (sorry, but if 1 or 2 didn't fix it, this is the last option) This is usually over $150, and will involve step 2 again when completed.

Bleed right rear,left rear, right front, left front in that order to be sure of good bleed but the brake booster makes it easy to push pedal. Make sure of no leaks from master cylinder. Otherwise brake hoses being soft will also hurt baking quickly.

Hi Robert!

When bleeding the fronts and the pedal does not go down all the way, stand on the pedal HARD and see if it won't go down then...

The proper sequence is to bleed fronts FIRST... if you had done this, you probably could have avoided this problem... but no worry, it is just a nuisance!

If you still have a problem after trying this, you might have a master cylinder problem... the seals to the fronts might be leaking, not able to build pressure...
