Opel Vectra 1998 engine cuts off in motion

My Opel Vectra (2.0) 1998 model cuts off in motion. For instance, the car starts normal and driving is ok but after awhile a sound comes up then the car will not accelerate anymore and eventually the engine is cut off. I will have to start the engine again to continue driving. This happens two or three times within a 20km drive and on other days it just happen once; occassionally it does not happen. What could be the problem and possible solution.

A Opel is a GMC but its a good German car But the problem could be one of a few.
To start with Check the breather pipe on the fuel tank to make sure the air gets in to the tank while you are taken out petrol... It could be the coils getting hot and braking down..I could also be fuel pump in the fuel tank playing up and not pumping the correct pressure for injectors.
BUT the noise what does it sound like i must no
to help more so check above and let me know

Could be the ECU or EGR valve, expensive job! get it checked by mechanic.. its dangerous, i know cos it happened me.. if its the ECU it can be relieved for a short while by disconnecting the EGR valve..

My opel vectra 2008 diesel is Hard to Start when left for a period of time.iw will start when turned over a couple of times and with alot of white smoke from the exhaust.

If it doesn't do this when operating at regular intervals, I wouldn't be overly concerned. White smoke is normal for cold diesels, as long as it is only at start up and stops when warmed up. You may have a pump starting to lose its prime though. That would account for having to turn it over a few times after it has sat for a while.

just because. the glow plugs are new, does not mean they work correctly, not at all. (yes, they can have weak or now power to them)
1: glow plugs work. really.
2: fueling correct. (fuel filter new, ?)
3: hearty battery and starter cranks nice and fast.

P1230 is fuel pump fault. You need to check the fuel system instead. check fuel presure, fllter and lines then the pump itself

Opel Vectra B model 1997 Gl 5d 1.6 wont fire up

Ok..for starters have you checked to make sure your getting fire to the plugs? Need to pull a plug wire off and check to make sure. If your getting fire then your problem lies in the fuel delivery system...if not then it would be in the ignition system...have you checked ALL of your fuses? Make sure that your fuel filter isn't plugged, and on the fuel rail you'll find a small port with schrader valve (similar to that on the tire)..you can turn the key to the run position and then push in on valve to see if your getting fuel to the rail..once you narrow it down to fuel delivery or ignition problems we can further narrow it down.

Opel vectra 1998 model run for some minutes then cuts off or if you apply breaks suddenly it cuts of what couyl be the problem

One of three things: Firstly (and my money is on this being the problem) is the idle air control valve. The Ecotec engines were infamous for this problem.
Secondly it could be the throttle body needs cleaning. I think it's situated behind the engine, sort of under the windscreen if you know what I mean? These can be removed and cleaned out fairly easily, use a decent quailty choke and carb cleaner and clean it thoroughly.

Thirdly (and probably the easiest job to sort) is to try and replace the spark plugs.

This, of course, is assuming it's a petrol engine and not a diesel.

I have a 1998 Holden Astra eng noEL20B24119 and want to know the Head bolt torque settings and sequence. The engine is the transition model with twin tappet cover seals. has the torx star headed bolts.

I cannot find a EL20B in my data, but all Astra listed had the same head sequence as shown:

10 6 2 3 7

9 5 1 4 8

the torque specs for the C20XE,C20NE,X20XEV were all
25nm(18lb/ft),-then 90 deg,-90deg,-90deg.
Z20LET were as above plus an additional 15deg.
Same data for smaller and larger engines(except a couple that were 45deg instead of 15)
Make sure that you replace the head bolts with new, they are torque to yield bolts that are designed to stretch to 'plastic' state, and should not be reused.
Put grease(graphite if you have it) under bolt heads and washers, oil the threads.
Usually the head sets come with the torque specs.
I hope this helps you.
