Subaru Legacy 91 wagon, replaced ca,belt/timing belt, now timing is slightly off, how do I adjust this?? Just turn a certain cam a bit or what

find the dipstick ,its their somewhere lurking and yes the transmission fluid goes down the same hole ,,,chock drive wheels handbrake on warm engine(running) with reverse selected to check trans oil level

Do you hear a 'click' when the key is turned to start? Have someone try the key while you listen under the hood. It should be the starter solenoid clicking. You need either a test light or voltmeter to test further. One large terminal on the solenoid has the large wire from the battery positive, and should always show voltage/light at all times. Test the other side of the solenoid (large terminal) that is connected to the terminal on the starter motor. It should show light/voltage when the key is turned. If it doesn't, the solenoid must be replaced. If it does show light/voltage, then the starter motor is defective (probably brushes). If you get no click when turning the key, test the small terminal on the solenoid, you should see a voltage/light change when the key is turned. If you see a change, but no click, the solenoid coil is open or the case of the solenoid is not grounding where it is mounted. Try loosening the mounting and re-tighten. If no help, replace the solenoid. If you see no change at the small terminal, remove the wire from it and using a spare piece of wire, touch the small terminal to, first, the large terminal that the battery is connected to, then to the the mounting bolt for the solenoid. If the solenoid is good, the starter should operate with one of these two tests. In that case, the starter position of key switch is open--replace the ignition switch.

I fouled up the timing on my 1990 Subaru Legacy Wagon. Tried resetting it to the factory specs but it still wont start.


You have not set it to the factory spec, and its probably 180 degrees off. Rotate the crank to top dead center (the mark on the crank toothed pulley, align the cam timing marks, refit the belt THEN release the tensioner. Rotate the engine manually to verify that all the timing marks realign themselves.

After changing the idler bearing on my subaru legacy 91 wagon compression is low in the nr 1 and 2 cylinder the car wont start, timing was jumped as the bearing failed but appears to be correct as repaired


I assume that you mean the cambelt idler bearing.Ok if you are sure that the timing is correct for all cams(DOHC)?.Then the problem may be bent valves caused by the bearing collapse allowing the cams to go out of timing and cause valve strike.
I would recheck the timing,ensuring all marks line up precisely,the only one that should look 1/2 a tooth out is the crank.Genuine belts are always preferred for these as they have all the markings on the belt to align all the cams and crank,some other suppliers do not have this

Sounds like you have a broken belt for the alternator and power steering.

1994 subaru legacy wagon 2wd auto leaking oil, after installing new valve cover gaskets, cam seal, and timing belt.


probably resulting in bad instalation !
i sugest you to klean the area with large amount of break kleaner and then drive the car to find the exact location of leakage to make the repair easy ...could also just try to tigntnig a bit all the screws again!

Change cam belt on 1995 legacy


If your going to do or get this done you need to replace the camshaft seals crankshaft seal and water pump plus the idlers and tensioner.
If its a quad cam you might just want to leave it to the pro's........

Cam belt change - which mileages? 245k on clock, changed once at 197k


They recommend timing belt changes on Subarus every 125K miles.

AC not working


Check belt for adjustment as loose belts as loose belts can cause a squeal if that is ok then it's possible that the AC compressor is locked up. Remove the belt and turn compressor by hand and see if it spins freely if it doesn't there is your noise. While you are at it spin all pulleys by hand feel for rough turning and listen for noises.
