Question about 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Open Question

I have a short somewhere in my electrical system going to the transmission but can't pinpoint it. If I mess with the wires the van will start, but after running for a while it will just shut off.

First thing i would try is to carry a can of WD-40 or quick start with me and when it quits and won't start, remove air intake hose at throttle body opening, open throttle enough to give a good spray inside throttle body, release throttle, then try to start it . If it starts and runs momentarily, you have a fuel delivery problem. If not you have an ignition problem. Then you can start troubleshooting from there.
Or you can carry something to test for spark. I just find this way easier. Don't know when/if fuel pump has ever been replaced, but not uncommon for them to work when cool and quit pumping when they get warmed up, even though they sound like they are still working. That's where a fuel pressure test would also confirm, keeping in mind pressure may read good when first started but will drop later when warmed up and engine quits.

Principles of Operation
Transfer Case - Electronic Shift
The four-wheel drive, electronic shift-on-the-fly feature electrically shifts the vehicle transfer case between 2WD, 4X4 HIGH, and 4X4 LOW. The system mode is selected by the operator through the mode select switch (MSS) on the instrument panel. The operator is informed which mode the system is in by two instrument cluster indicators, one for 4X4 HIGH which is 4X4, and one for 4X4 LOW which is LOW RANGE (in 4X4 LOW both the lamps are on). Shifts into 4X4 HIGH can be made at any speed. When shifting into 4X4 HIGH with the vehicle stationary, tooth blockage may occur, preventing shift completion. When the vehicle is driven above 8 km/h (5mph) the shift will complete. When shifting in or out of 4X4 LOW, the generic electronic module (GEM) requires that the vehicle speed be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake pedal be applied, and the transmission in NEUTRAL (automatic transmission) or the clutch pedal be depressed (manual transmission). (The digital transmission range [TR] sensor informs the GEM when the automatic transmission is in the NEUTRAL range position.)
The gearmotor encoder assembly is mounted externally on the transfer case. It drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and the range fork within the transfer case between the 4X4 HIGH, 4X4 LOW, and 2WD range positions.
The GEM uses two relays to control the gearmotor encoder assembly shift between 4X4 HIGH, 4X4 LOW, and 2WD modes. The GEM controls the pulse vacuum hublock (PVH) solenoid which supplies engagement and disengagement vacuum to control the hublocks.
The GEM accomplishes shifts by interpreting inputs from:
  • mode select switch (MSS)
  • vehicle speed signal (transmitted from the ABS system)
  • gearmotor encoder plate position
  • brake pedal switch
  • digital transmission range (TR) sensor (automatic transmission)
  • clutch pedal position (CPP) switch (manual transmission)
  • ignition switch
Based on these inputs, the GEM controls the shifts into 2WD, 4X4 HIGH, or 4X4 LOW with the following outputs:
  • low to high relay (clockwise)
  • high to low relay (counterclockwise)
  • pulse vacuum hublock (PVH) solenoid
  • gearmotor encoder assembly
The electronic shift-on-the-fly (ESOF) system has a feature which allows the driver to override the vacuum operated hublocks. When the front hublocks are manually turned to the LOCK position, the hublocks are locked at all times, overriding the vacuum operated system. If the front hublocks are manually turned to the AUTO position, the hublocks can only be locked by turning the MSS to 4X4 HIGH or 4X4 LOW position.

Transfer Case The four wheel drive system is an electronic shift 4X4 system that allows the operator to choose between three different modes. The operator can switch 4X4 HIGH modes at any speed. To engage or disengage 4X4 LOW the vehicle speed must be less than 5 kph (3 mph), the brake depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL.
The shift motor sense plate, an integral part of the electronic shift motor, informs the generic electronic module (GEM) of the transfer case shift motor and contact plates A, B, C and D position.
The digital transmission range (TR) sensor is located on the LH side of the transmission, and informs the GEM when the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position.
The electronic shift motor is mounted externally at the rear of the transfer case. It drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and range fork within the transfer case between the 4X4 HIGH, 4X4 LOW and 2WD range positions.
When the GEM verifies the completion of the transfer case shift from 2WD to 4X4 HIGH (reading the contact plate positions), the GEM will then energize both pulse vacuum hublock (PVH) solenoids (supplying ground for 45 seconds). The PVH solenoid will allow a HIGH flow of intake manifold vacuum to the "wheel end hublocks", engaging the wheel end hubs to the front differential and transfer case to achieve four wheel drive.

As soon as I turn the key to engage the starter, the ENG CONT 10a fuse blows. It's the 6th one down from the top, on the right side.


You have a short somewhere in the starting and ignition systems. Take your car to an automotive electrical specialist immediately. If you put in a large enough fuse the car will start but you could trigger a fire that might destroy the car.

What large square fuse ? The 4X4 switch get's it's B+ voltage from the four - wheel drive control module . computer controlled ! Has two relay's - transfercase hi to low & low to high ,located in the Auxiliary relay box #3 . location left side of radiator core support . Your best bet ,take it to a qualified repair shop that has a diagnostic tool that can communicate with the 4X4 control module . Read code's ! Probably has a code like one of these

Transfer Case - Electronic Shift on the Fly (ESOF) Features A rotary switch allows the vehicle operator to choose between 2WD, 4H, and 4L modes of 4x4 operation.
The generic electronic module (GEM) controls the operation of the 4x4 system.
The output shaft speed (OSS), mounted in the rear of the transfer case, informs the GEM of the vehicle speed.
The shift motor sense plate, an integral part of the electronic shift motor, informs the GEM to the positions of the transfer case (go to Table 4).
The transmission range sensor is located on the LH side of the transmission; this sensor informs the GEM when the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position.
The electronic shift motor, mounted externally at the rear of the transfer case, drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and range fork within the transfer case to select between the 2WD, 4H, and 4L positions.
The 4x4/4x2 vacuum solenoids are attached to the upper RH side of the engine compartment, and alternately route vacuum to the vacuum motor which engages/disengages the center axle disconnect collar in the front axle assembly.
The 4x4 shift motor relay is a module containing two relays. Under the control of the GEM, the 4x4 shift motor relay shifts the transfer case shift motor between the 2WD, 4H, and 4L modes.
The transfer case clutch relay is an electromechanical relay used to activate the transfer case clutch within the transfer case.

I have a 1994 g20 chevy van 5.7 and i lost my power windows,speedometer,shifting of the transmission,radio,the fan to blow cold or hot air all at the same time. all my fuses are good and the...


Well everything but shifting of the transmission points to an electrical problem. What does it do when you try to shift it?

How did you know the fuses are good, did you check resistance?
For the electrical problem you need a voltage meter (voltmeter) or multimeter set to volts DC. Probe, with the fuse out, between ground (chassis steel) and where the fuse was pluged in. One side should show +12VDC, the other will be nothing. If you get the +12VDC, good. If not, there is a problem behind your fuse panel and you'll have to take that all apart to figure it out. (by the way make sure the key is on run, at least, or better yet with the engine running....try different key igniton positives (accessory, off, run) to see if it makes a difference)

If you're getting +12VDC there at the panel, then start checking for voltage elsewhere. Pinpoint where the wiring diagram would normally indicate voltage and there isn't any, there's the problem. Autozone or Advanced Auto or the library will have the manual you need, I recommend a Chilton over a Haynes.

I have this van too. My van is notorious for leaks and a rusted roof. If water got somewhere like the fuse panel slowly it's going to corrode (or short) parts of the panel or wiring.

Check ground wires too (negative are black wires, typically), like near the battery and under the dash to see if something has been broken from the chassis or badly corroded. Clean corrosion with emery cloth or a file then tighten. Antiseize can help prevent this too, it might be conductive as well, I'm not sure.

Hang in there, It can be fixed though, it will just take a little patient and checking under there till you get at the problem. It may be easier to work on it by taking the driver's side seat out, if you find you have a problem under the dash. Or remove the dash, but a seat removal is easier.
