Thanks for your response. The rear brakes are drums. The emergency brake adjustment I speak of, is about three quarters to the rear attached to the emergency brake cable. It looks like a bracket that you can adjust to keep the cable taunt. This adjustment is at its maximum. I assumed that it is used to tighten or adjust the emegerncy brakes. However, it being at its maximum does not allow me to tighten or adjust the emegency brakes. Hope this helps.

Yes, all brakes can be adjusted. BMW? Make and model is always appreciated. Emergency brakes are to the disc or drum via a cable. The cable has adjusters. Some cars have a separate pad for parking brake.

You can Google

How do I adjust the emergency brake?

Over here we call it a parking brake - hardly any of our cars are autos.

Parking brakes usually connect to the rear disc brake calipers but some manufacturers use a small drum brake in the disc centre for parking purposes due to the complexity of the caliper with integral parking brake.

When adjusting a parking brake it is important in most designs for the cable to be adjusted only to remove any free play without moving the caliper levers from the backstops and then if the parking brake lever or pedal travel is excessive it must be because of wear or other faults. Sometimes that basic requirement must be taken with a pinch or two of "experienced" salt...

Ford have a self adjusting parking brake I have experience of. A spring within the system preloads the cable eliminating all slack in the cable so the cable moves the caliper levers from the first. The main problem with the system is the preload spring is sometimes strong enough to overcome the resistance of the caliper spring and cause a binding brake. No manual adjustment was provided.
In that case I find fabricating and fitting brackets to anchor additional return springs to the calipers is a must.

I have a 92 ranger, 4l v6 2wd and have had problems with my brakes since i used the park brake at the boat launch...the rear brake on the drivers side was dragging and getting very hot, eventually wearing...

The parking brake problem could have started the problem you are having in the coldest weather. Some may disagree but look carefully at the emergency cable parts. The cable is suppose to equalize the pressure to each wheel. Some of the rear brakes are made to automatically adjust the SERVICE brakes when you use the emergency brakes. Therefore if the emergency brakes are not automatically tightening the SERVICE brakes, you can get excessive play in the "star" wheel and the flat rod that spans both shoes.

This means that the brake cylinder pistons can travel
too far in the cylinder and are trying to bridge the gap. The hold-down pins and springs are loose too.

You can also have moisture in the rear brake lines and the "Brake warning light" is coming on because the proportioning valve is not returning to center in the lines. You should have a power bleed job with a cleaner run through the system and new fluid. That may fix the problem without checking the adjustment of the rear brakes.

Ford ranger back brakes locked up? what can cause this?

If NOT PARK BRAKE & / or Cables , THE BRAKE HOSE (RUBBER) from body to Axel can Fail on the INSIDE in a Way that it HOLDS Brake Fluid IN the Rear Axel (LINES) "STEAL" It sounds Strange But in My 30 years I have seen this MOSTLY on Front (Rubber) Hoses But also A Number of times, if you Crack it Loose on the AXEL side (Just After Semi HARD APPLYING of BRAKE) and it Drains Fluid FAST this is your Problem. Only OTHER Item Involved to HOLD BOTH WHEELS is> As I Said the PARK BRAKE MECHANISM & / OR CABLES.

How do you adjust the parking brake on a 93 ford ranger , it currently does not hold the vehicle properly

Should be adjustments at the ends of your emergency cables that run along your the bottom of your truck frame . at the ends around the differential . loosen the nut and give it a few turns equally on both sides if theres two adjustments.

How to adjust emergency brake on 1999 ford ranger? It won't hold the truck any longer.

First pull the plug in the braka adjusting tool and make sure you still have enought shoe left to adjust then follow the cable from the rear brakes to the Y that connets the to brake cables then get a wire brush and brush off the threded end of the Y spray with WD 40 and then unlock the locking nut using two wrenches to hold one nut while removing the other then adjust the single end of the Y nut towards the joining part of the Y adjust it till cable is fairly snug jack up the rig so the wheels are off the ground and make sure the wheels still turn freely. are you sure that the auto ajusters are working? if you see the brake lining is less than 1/16 of an inch the thickness of a dime then replace the brake shoes first. If you need more information let me know and if you adjust the cable and need to replace the shoes later you will have to back off the nut to get the shoes on. thanks for using Fixya and if this was helpful please rate.

When I push in on my emergency brake is does not activate.

There are two main ways to adjust your brake. 1) adjust bracket on the frame rail (driver's side). 2)adjust rear shoes. check for proper movement of all arms and brackets on rear shoes.
