Question about 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

1 Answer

How do you check a dis coil (three coils on Ignition Control Unit) from 1997 Olds Cutlass Supreme 3.1L engine. Might you have the specs? I have a good ohm meter. Hand held OBD unit reports multiple random cylinder misfirings. Might it be fuel injector problem? I figure probable electronic problem. I can get the ICU checked at the parts store or should I just go to a garage with a good diagnostic unit?

3.1L Engine

  1. Tag and disconnect the two plug wires attached to the suspected coil.
  2. Remove the two screws securing the ignition coil to the Ignition Control Module (ICM).
  3. Remove the ignition coil.
  4. Before testing, visually inspect the coil for carbon paths or cracks which will contribute to weak spark symptoms.
  5. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the primary terminals on the underside of the coil. The resistance should be 0.50-0.90 ohms.
  6. Check the resistance between the secondary terminals. It should be 5,000-8,000 ohms.
  7. If the coil failed either test, it must be replaced.

1983 oldsmobile cutlass supreme,wont start

Well, you know the ignition coil has to be good. then the ignition control module inside the distributor has to be good. It controls the ignition coil firing times. This module can be tested at a parts store. And then, also in the distributor and attached to the ICM is the pick-up coil which tells the computer crankshaft position, so the computer knows when to signal the Ignition Control Module that it is to cause spark out of the coil. These are the components of the ignition system, so you know how to check them. Ignition coil, ICM, pick-up coil, and the pcm, computer.

First, check that power is getting to the coil when the key is turned to on. The coil must have battery voltage applied to it before it can cause spark. If there is power there, test the ignition coil, test the ICM, then the pick-up coil. If your wiring is good, one of them components may have failed. And of course, the last thing to suspect is the computer, the pcm. Hope you don't have to get that far.

I have a 91 olds supreme 3.1 v6 it shut off and won't start back .... It starts but won't turn over.... And when turn the key back off it's blows the dis fuse wich mean direct ignition system...

Check the coils that have been replace for bent or broken prongs that plug into the ignition control module and if nothing looks damaged then i would think the ignition control module is faulty.Replace ignition control module.

1996 olds cutlas supreme, 3.1 L has trouble codes PO171 and PO300. Any Ideas?

The po300 is a misfire code. This means there is probably a plug, plug wire, ignition coil,or ignition module.Check the coil towers one at a time. These are know for corroding. If you find one that is corroded then replace the plug wire also.Po171 is a lean condition code. The po300 could be causing the po171.If you have not had a tune up Now would be a good time.Hope this helps.Good luck.

It cranking than dying out

The Olds engine (I assume it is a 3.1) has a module under neath the coil pack. These modules can be a real problem as well at the coil pac. Most Autozone and Advance parts store can test the module for you if you remove it from the car. You will also want to test the fuel pressure. The specs are in section four of a Haynes manual. again at the parts store.

hope this helped.

Better have the starter, battery and chargeing system all tested. A starter can cause the problem.

'93 olds Cutlass Supreme eng died now not firing.

Its not the packs, I am pretty sure that is the distributor in the engine, (the one the coil pack hooks up to) I thought I knew my stuff until a 15 year old neighbor kid came and fixed my sundance that way, that or its a loose battery wire. hope this helps, have a nice day, and drive that thing like it was meant to be driven!
