Question about 1998 Ford Mustang

1 Answer

Engine mis-firing I have a 1998 Ford Mustang. The check engine light is on and I know I should first have the codes pulled but here is what it's doing. Sometimes it misses or misfires when on the highway. It feels like it jerks or pulls. you can tell it isn't firing right because when it runs well, it's really smooth. I have changed the plugs, plug wires about 4 months ago and I changed the coil pack about a month ago. The car has over 100k but had one owner before me and it was garage kept. Very well taken care of. The idle is alittle rough at times. Sometimes it runs really smooth. Any ideas?

I did use a fuel additive "Lucus?? something like that. I also cleaned the butterfly plate. This improved the idle. It was running alot rougher before. The jerking and the pulling doesn't happen everyday, sometimes once a week, sometimes once in two weeks. I haven't replaced the fuel filter, I'm having trouble getting the old one off. I removed the clips but it won't budge. Is there a trick to that?

go to Advanced Auto or any other parts store, they will usually read the codes for free. Without a code reader, you can not troubleshoot the code.

At idle the engine misses, off idle very smooth and runs normally computer code multi cylinder misfire. have changed plugs and wires did not help. could it be the coil packs of a fuel problem?

This sounds as if you have a vacuum leak, check all the lines and check the intake. There are a lot of things that will cause mis fire. mis fire code is triggered when the ecm reads a very slight difference in the time the crank sensor picks up a signal. Mis fires can be from electrical, vacuum, mechanical, and eletronic sources. If you can get it to a person/shop that read which cylinder are misfiring this helps alot, narrows the field. Let me know I can help. Also it helps to know what engine we are dealing with

Check engine light on..dealership says new transceiver needed?? I want to buy the parts seperate..what model and # do I buy...?? 1998 Ford Mustang, 6 cyl..

You'll need to go to an auto parts dealer (Napa, Baxters, etc) and give them the year, make, model, engine size (v6, v8 etc) and the Liter size, such as 3.8 etc.

They will be able to tell you what part(s) you need. Also, as a second opinion, have them run a diagnostics (free) test to determine the code matches that of the dealership.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Check Engine Light on Yr2001 Ford Escape V-6 2wd. Code says: Misfire on cylinder #5. Dealer said compression is low in cylinder #5. This Escape needs to pass smog. What can we do?

If the engine has a P0305 DTC (Data Trouble Code) for a "cylinder 5 mis-fire detected", then the first thing to do is to do a compression test to determine if the mis-fire is actually being caused by a mechanical problem, or an electronic problem.

If the engine really does have low compression on the #5 cylinder then that is caused by a mechanical mis-fire and nothing electronic will repair it, and the most common causes for a mechanical mis-fire would be a burnt or bent intake or exhaust valve, a warped cylinder head or damaged head gasket, or a damaged piston. You can call around and find a repair shop that will do a "compression leak down test" if you want to know exactly what is causing the compression leak without any dis-assembly to the engine.

I have a 98 ford mustang 3.6 and my check engine

Take it to your local Auto Zone and get the codes read. They can print you a copy of what to check for. IF the fluid is not flowing at all then your water pump is not working, be it due to belt or bearing in the pump. Have you changed the thermostat? Does the car actually run hot or does the light/gauge just read hot?

No check engine light on runs rough while in gear

Plug Mis-firing (firing-but not adequately) no light and no fire.
Causes: Spark plug bad, spark plug wire leaking.
If you can pull the spark plugs - and you find that one of them is wet or very dirty - compared to the others....the you have the wire/plug source identified.
