Question about 1994 Ford Tempo

1 Answer

My 1994 tempo will not go past about 20 miles per hour. Doesn't want to shift and is really loud when i push the accelerator pedal. Was OK this morning, but not this afternoon.

This could be caused by a number of issues....First, lets look at your exhaust....You said that your car was fine this morning and now it runs like **** and is increadibly loud.....So I am going to assume that this morning it was quiet (Or atleast no louder than normal) Check your exhaust for leaks, holes blown exhaust manafold gaskets...All vehicles use back pressure as part of compression, and compression turns the motor and vroom off you go....(sorry bout the cheezy explanation but I dont know how handy you are with cars)....If your car has an exhaust leak it will be loud and lack back pressure causing a loss in compression.....the less compression you have the harder the motor has to work to get up to speed, and if you have a massive leak close to the block this would cause a massive loss in compression hence your car has a hard time taking off (or going faster than 20 mph) The other possibility would involve enviromental changes (Highly unlikely that this is your issue) For example if your car runs good when it is nice out and then runs like **** when it rains,.....this would be an ignition issue...But as i said prior, I dont believe this is your problem.....Unless you hear alot of knocking from under the hood..If this is the case check to ensure your sparkplugs are tightened...if they are loose, (and plugs come loose all the time if not properly tightened down when they are changed) ...If they are loose it can cause your car to be loud and loose compression because all the pressure in the block is leaking out arround the spark plugs when this happens like i said you will hear engine knock from the head arround the plugs from compression leaks....Hope this helps you out lemme know if it does....But check for exhaust leaks close to the block first

Accelerate on gas pedal and does not go past 45 miles per hour

suspect cruse control setting.
some cruse control settings can be made so that no matter how hard you press the pedal it will only go to the set speed. check manual for any secondary cruise control setting that might have been set to 45.
