The distributer is out of time and the cylinders still have petrol in them when you stop so when you turn the car off the motor will continue to run because of the leftover petrol and heat how I tune the distributer to stop this

Best to get a timing light and set the timing in accordance with the decal under your hood. Or just turn the distributor with the engine running, i would guess counter clock wise, until it runs best. Turn it slowly, just a little at a time, and test it for power by brake torqueing. You don't necessarily want it at the place where it runs the smoothest.

Don't continue starting

When a car runs for awhile but then stops, one considers things like fuel filter, vacuum building up in the gas tank, etc.
The best way to tell is with a fuel pressure gauge attached to its port.
If the pressure drops, it could be a clogged filter.
but also remove the gas cap and listen for a hiss.

Starter replacement......needs to know how many cylinders my cars has

The starter has no cylinders. it is an electric motor powered from the battery and ignition system.
The chevy cavalier has a 4 cylinder engine though.

TDC stands for Top Dead Center, however it is only to set the cylinder number ! at TDC, if yu know where the timing marks are align the crank pulley mark to the "0" of the timing mark, usually this can be achieved by setting the crank shaft doel pin to twelve 0 clock position.

Well, there are some hundreds reasons why the engine can stop. Common ones are:
Dirty fuel filters, problems with electronic distribution, spark plugs to be changed, broken fuel pump, battery contact not in place, blown head gasket, rarely also a problem with anti-theft alarm motor lock can cause same thing.
Generally, if the car motor stopped immediately, with no additional symptoms is likely a problem with distribution ( no spark).
If you have experience in servicing your car you should start from checking if there is spark, and if petrol is being pumped regularly.
Best thing to do is always having it checked by a mechanic.
