You probably got a bad coil. The 99 5.4 has individual coils one could be misfiring, but you will have to hook it up to a computer.

Change plugs and wires. That's the best place to start. If it was just losing power i would suggest the fuel filter first, but sputtering is usually ignition.

Where is the egr valve on a 99 Ford expedition

The EGR valve is in a very difficult spot to work on. If the EGR is bad it will set off the check engine light and make the vehicle run rough or stall at idle. It really doesn't make it run rough while driving or accelerating. What are the conditions when the car runs rough?

When you know the symptom who needs codes? And if there was a code it probable say lean bank 02. why simple you have a misfire. the smell rich exhaust the shake and sputter in drive. 2 causes the Expedition suffer from ,An open EGR valve. If you can change a fuel filter and change a spark plug you can test this. when the engine is running and misfire at idle and the vehicle is warmed up and at operating temperature. Turn off engine. Go to the EGR is it hot to touch. because if it is it open and this the the culprit.Another misfrie is from COP (coil on plug.)When you change the spark plug where any of the spark boot torn or worn that spark can go through. Or even a faulty COP will do this .To find it you have the engine running and lift one COP out of the cylinder and listen for a engine drop if the engine RPM drop the COP is good if no change in engine the COP is bad. By the way 600rpm in drive is low

Assuming has a 5.4 liter eng. and the complaint is more of a shaking engine. these vehicles are notorious for bad ignition coils... coil over plug design.. problem is ther are 8 of them Hmm which one.. have the engine scanned and to find out which cyl. is missfiring then replace the coil(s)

I have a 2000 ford expedition. Out of the blue it started sputtering and shaking when I accelerate. Vehicle has144,000 miles.

Sounds like one of the coil over plugs have gone bad. this will cause mis-fire which causes your car to sputter, skip, and shake. It can be changed easily when finding out which one it is. But rather expensive for a simple part $40+ each.
