Question about 1994 Suzuki Swift

2 Answers

I have 2 x swift GTi's, with high rev problems!!

My white Gti's cold idle speed is 1800rpm which is ok, but my blue GTi idles at 2,900 rpm when its cold. The GTi doesnt have a choke, ite fuel injection, so I thought that it was the idle valve. I swapped them over and no difference!! After a few minutes, it starts to "hunt", rev up and down when I put my foot on the clutch, then after 5 or 6 minutes, it idles nicely at 1000rpm. The idle adjustment screw next to the throttle only seems to adjust the warm engine idle speed. Any ideas? I've checked for air leaks and there are none. I'm stumped!!!

Well, depending on your market of course, I'd still be fairly sure you do have a choke! It is located on the rear of the intake air plenumn chamber and has 2 small coolant hoses that come up from underneath - one comes from the thermostat housing area, and the other goes to the water pump area. Disconnect these and make sure you can blow easily through the choke unit. Like most Suzuki thermo-wax choke elements, they need hot water to contract, and in so doing, reduce the amount of extra air let into the engine. Unfortunately, it sounds like you may have adjusted the throttle stopper screw (it may have had a tamper-proof cover on it). If you have, the throttle plate-to-barrel clearance should be set back to as close as what your other car is by measuring the clearance with feeler gages. Let me know how you get on. I've got a 1991 version of the same and I'm in Australia.

Can you tell the location of the idle speed valve on a 1998 escort gti please

You will find idle speed controllers in the area of the throttle plates. In order to work, air must bypass the throttle plates.

idle air speed control valve(iac),too low idle or driveline problem like play in the drive shafts. if you put it in park and give it to say2500 rpm and let go of the throttle, does it return to 900rpm?if it dips down to 5 or 600 then to 900 the iac is bad.

that is totally normal, the car has an automatic choke that makes is rev at those RPMs when it is cold then is goes back to normal when it warms up. don't worry about it!
