Question about 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier
From what I know, that engine should have coil packs above each sparkplug. Usually if your trace your spark plug wires from the motor back you will see a boxy looking device on top. This is a seperate coil for each spark plug, usually having 2, 10mm screws on each one. I believe the older models have the acutal coil and rotor but not for this year. Also, there is no maintenance for the individual coil packs, unlike its counterpart, until you have no spark for that cylinder. If you still have questions, you can call your local Advance Auto, Napa Auto, Carquest etc. for the exact information for your year, make, model and engine size.

Just follow the plug wires, they plug into coil packs.

If your looking to replace them, wich is what most do today, it is cheaper to purchase a axle with new cv joints than to rebuild them. It is a very simple job in todays cars, remove tires remove lower tie rod , remove nut in center of the rotor and pull wheel assembley to the side hanging from the strut, pull axle out replace the transmission seal, push new axle in. When putting wheel assembley on, use a hydraulic jack on bottom of the rotor to push it to the axle splines and put the new nut on .

SOURCE: locked out of 96 chevy cavalier
You can use a wire hanger with a hook bent onto the end fairly easily if you slide it down the window and try to feel around to hook onto the lock mechanism. It may take a bit of patience, but I got into my 2000 with not too much trouble. Then do what I did immediately afterwards - get another key cut to keep in your wallet...
