You mentioned that the vacuum solenoid is on the firewall, is the vacuum switch about 2 inches high and have just 2 vacuum lines? Also, will this cause all of the 4wheel lights to be out?

Is the vacuum switch that is on the firewall and is it about 2 inches long and have 2 vac lines in it? Could this or the motor cause the 4wheel lites not to work?

  • bogezbarx Oct 08, 2009

Ok, I'm the idiot. I have my own lingo, the front chunk is located where???

  • bogezbarx Oct 08, 2009

So you're saying that neither of these 2 items will not cause all of my 4wheel drive lites to not illuminate, including the AWD. I have checked the fuse in the inside and the one in the eng compartment. Are you saying all of this could be caused by a switch? Ive had this SUV for about a year and a half. The vehicle has 101K on it and 1 4wheel drive worked 3 weeks ago.

Ok, I checked the fuse in the inside and the one in the engine. I dont want to just shotgun it and change the motor. do you have any resistance or voltage readings I can check?

The 4wheel drive indicator light is most likely fine. It is a problem in your transfer case. It won't select 4 wheel drive because of the problem. Have the trans and differential drive boxes serviced.

There is a small motor/actuator on the transfer case that actually does the shifting. It is called an encoder motor, or just a transfer case motor. It has various contacts and limit switches that can go bad to where it becomes intermittent or won't shift at all. This is the most common cause of the problem u have.

These had an issue with a vacuum solenoid on the front chunk around this year model. They also had an electronic 4 wheel drive with a motor on the transfer case. If it has the motor on the transfer case insure that it is getting power to it with the switch engaged in 4 wheel drive. If no power then the switch is bad if power there the motor is bad.

No is a vacuum solenoid on the front chunk not on the firewall.

  • william moody Oct 07, 2009

The vacuum switch on the firewall is the map sensor, the one on the front chunk if equipped is the one that engages the 4wd. and no this would not effect the lights. Only the switch not working would cause the lights not to work.

Changed to 4wheel drive low and I can't get it to change back to 2 wheel drive.

1999 Blazer. Thing's to check. 4x4 problem. There's an actuator pump under your battery plate. Make sure its in good shape and its working proper. Next check the cable that runs from the pump to the front transfer case. Then check the actuator switch on the front transfer case. Then check the vacuum lines from the front transfer case to the rear transfer case, that should be right under the drivers side door. There's also a actuator switch on the rear transfer case witch two vacuum lines run out of. Check them also, and last check your fluid level in your transfer case. Start from the beginning to the end. Don't forget to use your 4x4 every know and then to keep it up to power. Its not like the good old days. Where a pull of the lever on the floor engaged the 4x4. I hope this helps.

1992 chev blazer tahoe lt.. 4 wheel drive worked last year. Tried to engage it this year for first time and would not go into 4Lo or 4Hi. Was in neutral. Start vehicle and green light on 4wheel option...

not a fuse if you have power to switch,if your 4wheel light does come on and is not blinking, check the little motor on the transfer case, tap it while someone tries the switch,it might just be stuck from not being use,if it doesn't free its self you may need to replace it.

My 1997 chevy blazer does not have a 4wheel drive switch

If there is no switch present then it is full time 4X4, it does not disengage, good for travel bad for fuel mileage.
