Question about 1993 Dodge Caravan

3.0L The radiator fan will not come on. I have changed the fan, the engine temp sensor and radiator fan relay, cleaned the ground wire to top of the engine, what else is left ? i also don't understand why there are 4 wires in the connector to the fan when the schematic only shows 2 ? a ground and power ? The vehicle is used on a mail route. Basically the gauge reads about midway for the first two hours or so then when the vehicle starts to climb a low grade hill and idles the gauge creeps up to Hot, but if run in the open air without idling it cools back to midway as i have used this trick to continue. i need to mention there is also a smaller radiator connected to the front of the larger radiator unit which is connected to the transmission to cool it. it seems the engine only gets hot on the uphill grade, if it's level or download i could run it hours and let it idle and i have no problem even without a fan as the gauge states midway. is there another sensor perhaps in the transmission or a fuse in the circuit. i just don't know what else to check to get the fan to come on. if there is a fuse where is it located in the circuit. i have heard there is a in line fuse in the wiring someplace. i do not believe there is a switch on the lower part of the radiator. not sure what else to do except maybe create my own bypass circuit to drive the fan when needed, but i like to fix it to factory if possible. 1993 dodge caravan 3.0L

    There is no fuse labeled for radiator fan in the fuse compartment for this system. so there are 2 switches. i have replaced the gauge sensor i believe as that is what the advance auto man pointed out which i will acquate as one switch i am guessing,,, so now i need to find the one the drives the fan ?

There are actually two switches in the cooling switch one is for the guage and one is for the fan. One is usually mounted near the thermostat housing and one is usually mounted in the block or in the end of the head near the thermostat housing. There is a fuse should be located in the main fuse panel. As far I know I have never seen one in line far the fan I have seen a ballist resistor hooked to the fan which is like a fuse, should be mounted near the fan itself and is white and about 3 inches long.

    The pcm is the computer for the van which I doubt is bad. If you have checked the fuses and relays and they appear to be good it is more than likely the cooling fan switch mounted in the motor. The first one you replaced the temperature guage switch.

1995 toyota camery, coolant fan don't come on, over heating, change radiator, sensors-temp. and inytermotor,checked all relays, fans were working on ac, after changing sensor, they stopped, help!

Please have a look on the following items:
- Radiator fuse, relay, relay 2 and relay 3. They are located in the engine compartment.
- Radiator fan switch. It is located on cylinder head on the water splitter near the thermostat.
- Harness wiring for broken wire, loose, contaminate or corroded connectors.

Does a 01 mercury cougar have a radiator fan switch, and where is it if so?

radiator fan switch ???? has relays ,high speed cooling fan relay an engine cooling fan relay an a cooling fan resistor . A coolant temp. sensor . The temp sensor is a input to the PCM - engine computer ,when temp gets to hot the PCM energizes the relays . There is no radiator fan switch . Videos on youtube . http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html check out wiring diagram here .

The electric fan that cools my radiator is not running.

The radiator fan should come on when car reaches normal operating temp,With engine at Idle and temp normal feel the top radiator Hose ,it should be hot,If no then Engine coolant is not moving-cause could be an "Air lock" if that is the case,turn key off until it cools then disconnect top Hose and start engine,at normal temp,you should have Engine Coolant coming out,turn key off let engine cool;reconnect and refill with a 50/50 mix;

Back to the Fan problem;the Fan should come on when engine temp is normal,if not turn the Air-Conditioner on,radiator Fan should come on at any temp;two checks ,one is the Fan Relay ,located in the under Hood main power supply box;There will be 3 or 4 relays for different systems since they are of the same part number swap and see if problem is fixed;if no check the Fuse in same power supply box;You said fans spin so they are not locked up;Take an eight dollar D.C. circuit tester,they look like an ice pick with a clamp for ground attach,to ground and with the fan plug disconnected see if you have voltage; ,You can have a continuous fan by finding a wire close to the fan that has power when the key is in the on position,take a wire and attach to that wire;

My radiator fan is not working and I cannot find any of the relay fuses I have seen in other cars for this type of problem.

Follow the wiring back from the fan motor, the relay is often found at about the height of the bottom of the radiator on the inner fender. Check that connection is clean and free of corrosion. Check that the fan works by taking two trailing wires directly from the bettery terminals and connecting then to the fan motor directly. Use a voltmeter and check the voltage at the relay when engine is cold and shortly after the radiator top hose from the engine becomes hot (the coolant sensor should have signalled for the fan to switch on at this time). No voltage indicates a break in the circuit or faulty sensor. Voltage but no fan indicates faulty relay

I have a 2008 Town and Country and the temp gage gets to dead center and I smell antifreeze. Never remember the gage ever reaching the center before either. So I Checked to see if the radiator cooling fan...

ok this might sound crazy but you say you smell coolant but never said if you checked to see if it was full posible bad coolant temp sensor or no coolant passing the sensor please more info on coolant usually if low coolant fan will stay on however you say you smell coolant. If the coolant sensor is bad fan wont command on it will have a high resistance a low coolant temps and low at high temps. I would check sensor since its obviously getting hotter than half way if you dont have coolant leak the relay behind the head light by the way is a common problem I would have just changed it if its original and it grounds to body thats why it is riveted however you can bolt them. Hope this helps check for thermostat opening at right temps to.

Engine heat get high & whats kind of fan radiator suitable

i am familiar with the car and the problem . the best thing to do is go to the local parts store and ask for an adjustable thermostat fan switch its about 40 dollars you wire it to the battery the fan and a ground mount it near the battery start the car and adjust the knob to the desired fan turn on temp . to fix the setup you have there is a fan turn on temp switch on the passenger side head toward the rear should have one wire on it that grounds the relay on the radiator support . 87 should have one fan one relay sometimes the relay burns and melts the plug you have to buy a replacement plug from a parts store along with a relay so to test it ground the sensor wire with the key on and fan should turn on if it does that's the problem you could also buy a low temp one from summit racing.com the fan will turn on sooner if it still wont turn on the relay is the next culprit check if you have power and a ground with key on at relay plug if you do the relay is bad change it . hope this helps

Mk 5 escort radiator fans not working, looking for a wiring diagram

if BOTH are not working.... then it could be the temperature sensor that is screwed into the radiator. You can verify the fans are good (or bad) by putting a ground on the sensor wire (I use a safety pin and push it into the insulation - then touch it to ground.
C A U T I O N: The fans should start immediately - so keep your fingers clear!!!!!!!!!!!!

95 grand am radiator fan only runs with AC on

Cooling Fan Temp Sensor is the First thing You Check (with what you have described) Cooling Fan Should ALways come On When The A/C is turned On as A/C Adds A Load to Engine, If Temp Sensor is Faulty it Will Not Give GROUND Signal to ECM >For COOLING FAN >RELAY to Give ground and turn ON The Fan.
There ARE 2 temp Sensors that Serve Different Purposes 1 is for Dash READING GAGE & Or TEMP LIGHT the Other is For ECM or Fan Relay (SAME Thing) you Said>""can disconnect the sensor and fan continues to run" < This Leads me to think you Changed the Wrong One. Not Questioning your Skills Just Here to Help.
TEMP SENSOR FOR 3.1L V6 is Located upper RH rear of engine compartment, near exhaust system. Temp SENSOR for 2.3L Engine is Located in LH rear of engine compartment.
I Hope this Helps Lead you to a NON-OVERHEATING Pontiac.
Good Luck and Have A Great Evening. rejakwilson
