The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line. It's job is to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.

What would cause the fan to not accel with higher temperature like it should. Mine started overheating and I sent it to a shop and they said that's the problem but they can't figure out how to fix it.

Need more info.....try to find out exactly what they did in the shop.
The first thing that comes to mind is a faulty coolant temp sensor but they should have checked this in the workshop......did they perform a full diagnostic check with their computer ?

Make sure the cooling system is purged of all air in the cooling system,by bleeding the system out.Check to make sure the cooling fans are coming on,and going off, with the ac off.I hope this helps you with the problem you are having.

You may have a blown engine head gasket. Check your oil to see if it is milky because water is getting into the oil, and check the water to see if oil is getting into the coolant.
If you have either of these, you may need to have a new head gasket for the engine, and hopefully you do not have a cracked engine head.
This will require a fair bit of work to fix correctly. Your local garage or mechanic may be your next call.
There are some products you can use in the coolant for either of these, but it is only a temporary fix.

2001 Mazda MPV overheats. radiator hose doesnt feel pressurised ie very soft to squeeze. when i put coolant in after 5 mins of driving is backflows out of the reservoir and causes heavy smoking from t

sounds like the radiator is blocked either coolant flow or ext air flow through the matrix the thermostat can get ruined when the system overheats so allways change the stat after a overheat problem GET THE RAD CHECKED FIRST if ok check the coolant pump

My 98 deville had a cracked radiator. replaced it. all was fine till a couple weeks ago when it overheated due to coolant leak from purge tank. replaced it. no more leaks but still ran up to 140 w/ air on...

First, you must have a properly installed thermostat that is working correctly. Second, Northstar engines are notorious for air in the cooling system after draining and refilling - keep checking the purge tank level after overheating and after the cooling system cools down. Third, make sure your cooling fans are working correctly (relay, fuse, temperature sensor) - check to make sure both are running when it overheats. If all the above is correct, the problem will probably be blockage in the system (try a flush) or your water pump itself is failing.

it sounds as though your acadia may not actually be overheating, it sounds more like the tempeture sensor is bad, if its "froze" at a certain reading this could fool your computer, you should be able to replace this part for around 20 or 30 dollars. hope this helps

Hello, if you are losing coolant as you say than the most probable place is through your head and into your exhaust system, it is highly likely you have a cracked head or a major head gasket leak. The only other place it can go is if you have a automatic vehicle with the cooler on the bottom of the radiator tank (crack between two tanks), it will go straight into your transmission, you can tell if the transmission oil is overfull and watery (thin and whitish).

I have a 1991 deville, and it just started overheating about 1 month ago. I put anti freeze in it and when its driven alot or long miles, then it runs hot and the antifreeze is gone.

If the engine fan works and you get good heat from the heater then you could have a bad head gasket. First make sure you dont have a leak somewhere and the car is overheating from low coolant level.

Begin by changing the thermostat...from what you have written this is the best starting point. Is the lower hose substantially cooler than the upper when it's overheating?
