Question about 1998 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

I have 98 eddie bauer ford explorer with headlight problems. Headlights work when first starting up and then about ten minutes into drive the dash lights flicker and then headlights go out. If i pull the highbeam back the lights stay on. Another ten minutes the lights start working correctly. Already replaced the multifunction switch on the column.

The headlamp switch will cause the lamps to turn off. The switch heats up and turns the headlamps off. It will cool down and work for about 10 minutes and cut out,

Dimmer switch more then likely (hi ,low switch) , but testing B+ voltage in and out for low beams > Find a wiring diagram at http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Get a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter , Back probe the correct wires , red with black stripe at the dimmer switch , in the low beam position and headlamps switch on , is there B+ voltage ? There are videos on youtube for basic automotive electrical testing . Maybe you should take it to a qualified repair shop .

2007 ford explorer interior lights work then do not then work

if the problem is happening only when the door is open, it could be a bad connection in the door jamb switch that turns on the lights when you get in.

If it comes and goes while you are driving, the problem could be in the headlight switch/light dimming knob.

loose connection or faulty switch is my guess here.
