Question about 2000 Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

My 2000 Maxima says check engine. We diagnosed it and they came up with P0420 and P0430. What can we do to removed this problem because it needs to pass smog. Some told us to replaced the catalyst converter, but I think it's something else causing the problem.

Definition of Diagnostic Trouble Code P0430 Category: Powertrain Definition: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2Note: This definition of P0430 is applied to all manufacturers

As the code description implies the P0430 code means that the vehicle's control module has detected that the three-way catalytic converter is not working properly (is not as efficient as the factory is expecting). Replacing the oxygen (O2) sensors may sometimes fix the code, but in most cases the catalytic convert needs to be replaced to fix the problem. If the P0430 code is combined with other codes, try fixing the other codes first.

My 1999 Chev Tahoe will not start - Has codes p0430 and p0420

Hi Charlie,
Diagnostic Test Codes (DTCs) P0420 and P0430 ar "Catalyst Efficiency" codes. These simply mean that the catalytic converters in your vehicle are not performing the way they should be. To fix these codes, you will most likely have to replace the converters. However, these codes do NOT indicate why your engine wil not start. There are many things that can cause an engine to not start. Many of which may or may not set fault codes. You need to determine if the engine is getting fuel and ignition first then go from there.

I have a 1996 Ford Taurus GL, and the temperature gauge fluctuates up and down and i replaced the water pump replaced and all that other stuff, and than the check engine light is on and I have disconnected...

P0420 and P0430 are catalytic converter codes indicating that the converter isn't working properly. Temp gauge fluctuating can be caused by a bad thermostat, bad temp sensor, bad wiring harness to the sensor. Also check for air in the cooling system. Read the post below for more information on the catalytic converter issues.

I have a 2000 nissan maxima and, after going to an auto parts store, was told that the code for the "service engine soon" lite being on is p0430. the person told me that it could be a multitude of things,...

"DTC P0420, P0430 THREE WAY CATALYST FUNCTION"

This code can be logged if a bad quality fuel,

the nissan daignosis procedure goes...

1. check the exhaust system for leaks, damage etc. this will give the sensor a bad reading
2. check for intake air leak, would be a hissing sound between air flow meter and engine throttle, maybe a loose hose, the intake tube can come loose in the middle.
3. check ignition timing, this should not change, if it did there would be more codes than this. bad quality fuel can also cause incorrect timing
4. check spark plugs, are due to be replaced at every 100,000km.

after that there is a lot of wiring tests, one of these 4 things would be most likley. reccommend try fuel from a different station first.
hope this helps

Service engine light,code po 420

A good brand name direct fit converter should keep the light off as long as the cause of the first converter failure is corrected. I would not use a universal fit one. Walker is a good brand, I have used them and never had a problem. Here is some more information, hope this helps.

When diagnosing a PCM code or codes: P0420, P0430, be sure to determine the cause of the converter failure. These converters are not likely to fail without an external cause. Typical causes are: fuel pressure regulator leak, engine misfire, dirty fuel injectors, coolant consumption, etc. Also, be aware that some converters on the market will cause this code or codes due to a lack of oxygen storage capacity. A component that must be in these converters, Cerium, is required to store, then slowly release oxygen. NOTE: P0420 is a bank 1 converter code, P0430 is a bank 2 converter code. If the vehicle has only one converter, then P0430 does not apply.
