You have a leak! Take to a garage where they can pressure test the cooling system and find the leak! After running the pressure builds up so when you turn the engine off it expels the coolant through the leak but while running it flows past the leak!

1998 Ford Contour 2.5 litre, 30,000 km. Started cold after sitting for a day in -20C temperature, and idles for little while then quits, and smells like gas. Idle speed fluctuated and surged up and down...


PO171 and P1131 point to lean codes on bank PO174 and P1151 point to lean code on bank PO305 is missfire on cyl 5

the lean codes is probably a vacuum leak or maybe a MAF sensor is bad or dirty

missfire is dependant on engine if a V10 it may be a coil actually pretty likely on the modulars not uncommon thats for sure
sorry forgot to add that its says missfire on #5 cant remember if that one is the first on the left or last on the left facing the engine vacummn leak could be those dang auto hubs got it stuck in the mud and they did not engage I need to buy some new ones took them apart to clean them out this summer

When engine warms up it start to surge


Engine stalls cold or RPM fluctuates at idle up and down or dies near idle.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control. If the above cleaning doesn't cure your issues you need to have the computer controlled automatic idle speed control system diagnosed and repaired by a dealer or electronic engine control repair shop.

either the thermostat is getting ready to fail or the temp sensor isnt working properlythese engines also leak fluid from rear side of head after getting hot so check that so may have air in system because of the blown head gasket

Engine heat indicator flexuates, but engine


There is a coolant temperature sensor on the top engine block to measure the temperature. Either the connector is loosen or the temp sensor is bad. This sensor is bad will cause the gauge reading fluctuated. Locate the temp sensor and replace it to take care of the problem.

Heat sensor bad? temperature guage has quick fluctuations.other guages fluctuate.


You might want to make sure the ground strap that goes from the body to the dash is not loose. Caused me problems in a Ford I used to have.

Continous surging and stalling


Per your description, I would suspect a fuel pump issue. When the fuel pump is running the pump impeller heats up. On an older pump the impeller can begin to seize up and momentarily stops and starts. Some times it just stops and has to cool down for a couple of minutes, then is ok for a while.
To test this theory, when the engine stalls and stops, your mechanic can use a rubber mallet and hit the bottom of the gas tank, this will free the pump impeller and the car will start again.
Or, have him install a fuel pressure gauge and go for a drive. If the pressure begins to fluctuate and drop, you know the pump is causing the issue.

2004 Grand Cherokee: oil pressure fluctuates


if you know for certain that the sending unit is correct and the guage is accurate, then yiu may have big problems.....while the engine is running open the oil filler hole.. is everything wet with oil? or does it look dry or just a little lubed? you can allways install an aftermarket oil pressure guage(crappy tire) if you get the same results with that then you may have a week oil pump....worst case scenerio... need an engine rebuild as the moter may have wear issues.does the pressure slowly drop as the motor warms up? at idle ? does it jump up when you step on the gas?
