Question about 1993 Geo Tracker

2 Answers

I have a 1993 geo tracker 2wd and today took it for emissions test and it failed for excessive NOx. The tech who tested it informed me that it would either be timing, temp, egr valve or cat conv. Last year it tested ok. Last week I finished working on it beacause I had been driving it and it suddenly stopped and would not restart. I thought the worst- timing belt. But no, it was intact. Since I was there, I changed it anyway. The problem seemed to be more challenging. After changing a fuse (f1), it started.Stupid me, i know better than to go to extremes with a repair. A previous owner so graciously removed the check engine light assy I guess because it was annoying. Today, I put a bulb into that location and the CEL stayed on after starting...surprise! It inspected fine last year the way it is now. So my question is...Which is the most likely problem?

Smog is complex , here is the truth for your car , exactly.

first of all , a good Cat converter can hide a very bad running motor.
so making claims about last year, means nothing,
only the hear and now count in this complex electronic and mechanical marvel.

first off the top other helper here forgot to say , CALIF trackers do not have the Mileage nag switch.
and once you turn yours off (hidden it is) the the CEL lamp shows you if you have DTC errors. IT will say on , running.

now , there are 2 ways to fix a bad smog car.
1: fix motor.
2: new cat to hide #1 ( this will kill the cat every 2 years)
3 : fix both. both last .

easy as 1 ,2, 3, and is your choice.

if you choose to fix the real problem.
it can be as simple as repairing the EGR system.
this is also on my web page.
good luck

The check engine lights come on every 50k miles on the Trackers as maintenance reminders so you can take to a dealer to pay big bucks for him to push a slide switch hidden underneath the left speaker cover! Sounds like you have a bad chip in your ECU unit causing the injectors to give the engine too much fuel. You can replace just the chip, but the catalytic convertor can be partially stopped up if it has been running too rich for a while, the oxygen sensor would be what I recommend you replace first.

Failing emissions testing due to high NOX (oxides of nitrogen)

I have seen several people posting emissions failures due to high NOX (oxides of nitrogen). Nox is created when the engine's internal combustion temperature gets to high.

Two reasons this can occur is improper coolant levels and a malfunctioning egr system. The egr system injects exhaust gas from the exhaust and uses it to line the cylinder walls. This in turn reduces the combustion chamber size and internal combustion temperatures. Ultimately this reduces the amount of NOX created. These systems functioning properly can be the difference in passing or failing your emissions testing because of high NOX ppm.

My 1996 geo tracker won't stay in 4 wheel high

what does that mean? 2wd to 4wd fails, sure.
my guess, is you are on PAVEMENT (not ice,. or dirt?)
and never read the operators guide?

nor this?

this car is part time 4wd it is not AWD , full time all wheel drive.
and most not be driven on dry pavement in 4wd. or 4Hi, 4LO

or you will break good parts.

Fail smog test

fist i would like you to post the year make and model of the truck along with the HC ppms and NOX ppm it would be very helpful but high hc and nox can be attributed to a faulty EGR system nox is produced when the combustion chamber temperature gets too high so a small amount of exhaust is cycled back into the air stream to help cool them there are other causes but without looking at the levels its much harder to say

High Nox levels on emmission test

here are the possible causes of high nox levels, Misfire condition
Malfunctioning or improperly adjusted EGR valve
Failed oxygen sensor
Leak in exhaust tubing upstream of converter
Excessive carbon deposits in combustion chamber
Improper spark advance
Blocked coolant passage
Overly lean air-fuel mixture
Damaged cold air duct
Failed or malfunctioning catalytic converter
Corroded or damaged engine sensor electrical connections.the best advice is to take it to a emission specialist to check it out! good-luck!
