How do I put a distributor in a 1989 chevy 350 5.7L 1500 pickup. So I will get the correct firing order on the spark plugs

Remove the valve cover on the driver's side and turn the engine over by hand until you see the intake open on #1 cylinder. and then close followed by the exhaust valve starting to open. #1 is front driver's side.Back up a little and set the crank timimg mark on 0 on the degree marker. That should be TDC. Put the rotor button on the distributor and set it roughly at the 3 o'clock position and put it in. As it meshes with the cam gear it will turn and once fully seated should be at 5 o'clock. that is the position of #1 plug wire. If it's not at 5 o'clock pull it out and turn the rotor button slightly to catch a new tooth and reinsert. DO NOT force the distributor into position. Wiggle and push,turn the rotor slightly and it will go into place. Patience is the key here and make sure it is fully seated on the intake. Once it is in place the firing order is1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 and the distributor runs clockwise. Odd cylinder's are on the driver's side and even on the passenger's.
You may have to adjust the distributor a little one way or the other to get the engine to fire. That's normal. Once you get it running you can set the timing with your light. If you have no light then advance the distributor until it start's to sputter and do the same in ******. Then set your timing in the middle of that space, that will get you close. Hope this helps.

Before you take the distributor out, take the dist cap off (you may take 4 wires off of one side of the engine to help you get the cap off, but mark these wires and terminals) and make a note or mark of EXACTLY where the ROTOR is pointing. now remove the old distributor and install the new one EXACTLY the same. Note when you remove it, it will have a slight twist,coming out and the new one will need to be installed with a twist going in. if the distributor goes in, but not all the way in, but the rotor is where it needs to be, then the oil pump shaft is slightly off. the easy way is to get the dist in where it should be (rotor wise) is have someone turn the engine over as you keep contstant pressure down on the dist. after 1/2 turn, it should go in. Now that its in. put the cap on. you can mark the cap, wires or change them 1 at a time to the same terminal on the new cap. The Firing Order is 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 .

    awww thats nice but tha firing order 18436572 iz not 4 an 89 chevy 350. even tho its listed on the "intake " thats not the order. 18436572 is 4 1987 and eariler. Remember in 1988 the 305/350/400 cid became fuel injected. Note the 400 later became a motor installed in a pontiac firebird. 305/350 only wsed in "Chevy" autos. Tdc.... valve position, 1988

    WRONG. 18436572 is good. the firing order has NOTHING to do with Fuel Injection. There is no 400 CID, Chevy hasnt used a 400 in years, last used in the 1970's. I dont know where Pontiac goes into this guys question, but it uses the same firing order. 400 Pontiacs were last used in 1978. You better know what you are talking about.

1. Manually make sure you are at 1 Top Dead Center on the number 1.
2. Align the Distributor rotor with the number 1 position and insert the distributor.

If you have access to the timing chain are it is best to align TDC with the timing marks that are on the timing chain and cam sprocket. I highly recommend you get a haynes repair manual on your vehicle to do this if you have already removed the distributor and or have changed the position of the pistons and cams since the distributor was removed.

Firing order for 1989 nisson pickup


Four cylinder engine, firing order is 1-3-4-2. Spark plug wires (4 for intake side, 4 for exhaust side), beginning with 1I (at very front of distributor): 1I - 2E - 3I - 1E - 4I - 3E - 2I - 4E. Distributor rotates counter clockwise.
Six cylinder engine, firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6, cylinders 1, 3 and 5 on right side of engine, cylinders 2, 4 and 6 on left side of engine. Distributor rotates counter clockwise.

very good but did you check that the no1 piston was on tdc firing before you replaced the distributor . You may be 180degrees out on the firing order.

No spark to engine 1991 ford pickup


It can be faulty or dirty spark plug itselfd.Also for reference get the fuel level checked.Is the fuel tank is empty or near to empty.
Try cleaning the spark plugs and then see if that is helpin.On some cases the black carbon layer gets collected on the spark plugs and that causes the problem,so cleaning the plugs help.But if its not helping,then spark plug has to be replaced.Spark plugs get power from ignition coil to ignite sparks.If ignitioncoils are faulty then also there will no spark.--------------

I took of*** my spark plug wires working on my small block 350 pickup and I don't remember the the firing order to put the new wires back on. Is there a diagram anywhere or is it even that difficult to...


Next time number each lead before you remove it and no. the dissy cap as well

The firing order, which should be cast into the intake manifold, for the chevy small block V8 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The firing order is the numerical sequence in which the spark plugs are fired. The insertion position of each spark plug wire around the circumference of the distributor cap can be found according to a clock face. The insertion sequence determines the firing order. The firing order is followed clockwise around the distributor cap starting from the 6:30 position with the 6:30 position being the number one cylinder spark plug wire.
On classic chevy small block engines that use ignition breaker points instead of electronic ignitions, the number one cylinder is the one immediately clockwise of the small metal sash cover on the distributor cap. The firing order starts here. There is no sash cover on the distributor cap for GM HEI electronic ignitions, and the firing order is the same, but starting at the 5:30 position.
The firing order makes sense if you know how the cylinders are numbered. The number one cylinder is the front most on the drivers side and 2 being the front most on the passenger side. From front to back, the cylinders are odd numbered on the drivers side, and even numbered on the passenger side.

We would connect the number one spark plug wire to the distributor cap terminal in the 6:30 position. distributor.pngSince the next cylinder in the firing order is 8 (passenger side rear), we connect the number 8 spark plug wire to the next distributor cap terminal (approximately 7:30 position) in the clockwise direction from number one. You need to be sure you continue the firing order in the clockwise direction around the chevy small block distributor cap from the last installed spark plug wire. Setting the rest of the firing order is just a matter of repetition. Be sure to count the spark plugs from front to back on each side of the motor to identify the correct cylinder number in the firing order.

1989 Chevrolet K 1500 P/U 4WD
5.7 liter V-8 VIN "K"

Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-4-2
Distributor rotates clock wise and #1 is at the 5 O'clock position "post by the # 7 cylinder.

Cylinder # passenger side front to back 2-4-6-8
Cylinder # dirver side front to back 1-3-5-7
