Last few oil changes, the oil put in previously is just not there

No obvious leaks, gotta be burning it. Was using 5w-20..switching to 10w-30.

Engine has 80k miles on 4.6L. Vehicle has been babied since day one. Recently took to dealer to have seafoam application and belt/plugs changed. So when the oil change guys started saying, its multiple quarts low whenever i sent for oil change..it got me worried.

  • cajunspike Oct 06, 2009

Was using 5w-20 cuz thats what the oil fill cap on the truck said to use.

  • cajunspike Oct 06, 2009

    Sorry I wasn't more specific.
    2003 F150 Crew Cab with 4.6L V8, about 80k miles on it.
Unexpected loss of oil repeatedly over last year.
Its parked on concrete driveway, no oil spots on ground.
Oil fill stick said to use 5w-20.
Oil change guys would tell me its multiple quarts low when I went to get it serviced.
Vehicle has been babied since new.
Currently using 10w-30, not driving it as much lately.
Recently seafoamed by dealer and belts/plugs changed.

had somebody look at it..he says he can see valve covers leaking behind the engine...where the oil would just fall on exhaust and burn off leaving no puddles.

Everyone has thier own opinions on this, but as a Tech that has been in the biz for 16 plus years, I can tell ya it does NOT make a difference on what weight or viscocity you use. Chances are you have some other problems some where. Just a few things that will cause oil sonsumption are, clogged PCV, worn rings, and worn valve guide seals.

You are using way to thin of an oil. minimum should be 5W-30. the thinner oil helps on start up on cold mornings because it doesnt leave a coating on the pistons. Having said that it will cause them to wear faster and you may notice a nocking noise when you first fire it up. YOu are doing the right thing by switching to 10W-30. It coats the parts better and stays on them when the motor is off making startup safer for your parts. It probably is burning because of how thin it is, check your air filter and see if it has blown into there. You could also do a compression test and make sure everything is ok there. HOwever, I think the heavier oil will do you right.

It should hold 6 quarts. whoever has been changing it may be short changing you. Also, my brother had a 02 F-150 that was regularly 2 quarts low at oil changes and dealership said it is within tolerances on burning oil and wouldnt do anything about it.

Oil pump/engine ticking

I would go with the previous owners seldom changed
the oil & you bought a car with issues your not going to fix

( You checked the oil & it was thick, that told you what I
just said)

But you knew or expected as much, right !!

No vehicle uses 10W-30 oil in the last 25 years

Go with 0W or 5W-20 or 5W-30 & a half quart
of Marvel Mystery Oil

Mobil 1 Full/Syn

After that-- not much you can do except pull it
apart

What oil to use for a 10 year Ford Focus 2003

Generally speaking, we do not make recommendations on products by brand. Any of the brands you mentioned will meet the factory specs.
If the car has over 100,000 miles, you could bump up the weight to 10w-30 or 10w-40. Or stay with the factory recommendation.
The low number is the weight of the oil at zero degrees, and the high number is the weight at 200 degrees.
Keeping the oil and filter changed is more important than the weight.

WHAT OIL FOR 2005 KIA SORRENTO..PLEASE!

In the Owners manual is stated:
For better fuel economy, it is recommended to use the engine oil of
a viscosity grade SAE 5W-20 (API SM / ILSAC GF-4). However, if the engine oil is not available in your country, select the the proper engine oil engine oil using the engine oil viscosity chart.
What brand of oil to use is up to you. Castrol 5W-20 GTX, Pennzoil, Valvoline, or you can go up to Mobile 1, which is more expensive. If you change oil every 3000miles or 3 months, then you may not use synthetic oil, but it is up to you. My personal opinion is:
It is better to change 5W-20 Castrol GTX every 3 months or 3000miles than fully synthetic Mobil1 5W-20 every 6months or 6000miles.

global1207_0.gif

You can use 5W-20 all year around, but when you Kia Sorento will accumulate miles, and engine start to wear up, thicker 10W-30 is a suitable substitute. If the temperature will be 20F and expected to fall you must not use 10W-30, and will have 5W-20 in your Kia Sorento Oil PAN. The reason is that, when you start the engine the oil is in the Oil Pan, and 10w-30 is very thick in low temperatures. Till the oil warms up the engine wears up extensively.
