They do make a "tool" to install them. It keeps it true and straight, and if it isn't it may pop out. Also, take a look at the hole, to see it it's pitted. The plug should go in firmly.

I am trying to install a block heater because I am heading north to Alberta.

Block heaters are installed in place of one of your freeze plugs on the engine. Drain the coolant and knock out a freeze plug to install. Directions are included with the block heater, including usually which freeze plug to put the heater in, and the orientation of the heater in the freeze plug hole.

Freeze plup location

Back of engine, eh? The freeze plugs (3, maybe 4 on that back side) will be on the engine block, below the cylinder head, and below where the exhaust manifold mounts up. Look in back of the exhaust manifold for the plugs. Check for indication of leaking, it should be evident. If you have an engine block heater installed in one of the freeze plug holes, that may have loosened and started leaking. If you find a plug that needs replaced, put a stout screwdriver or punch on the freezeplug, not at the center of plug but to the edge, and whack it good. That edge will go in and the other side will stick out- grab with pliers and remove. Clean the area well to remove rust and scale where freezeplug seals in the block. It will be hard, possibly, to put in a new freeze plug with everything in the way. So buy a rubber expansion plug at the parts store-easy to install, just put a wrench on it to tighten. Take your old freezeplug with you to get the right sized expansion plug.
Good luck, hope you find it.

My 1998 chevy Malibu won't back up. I put it in

make sure trans fluid is full before taking it in for service. check the fluid level with the transmission hot,and the engine idling in park., the fluid level should be in the cross hatch area on the dipstick. make sure not to overfill it. if its low but touching the dipstick add a half quart at a time in the dipstick tube. the fluid level will be hard to read after filling it due to residual fluid in the dipstick tube, just stick in the distick a few times, wiping it clean everytime until you get an accurate reading. if thats not it you will have to have to take it in for service.

Need to replace freeze plugs

You just drive the exixting freeze plug into the hole in the engine block. Once it has been driven all the way into the water jacket, it can be turned sideways and pulled out of the hole with a pair of pliers. Then you put a little black rtv on the edge of the new freeze plug and drive it straight into the hole until the edge of the freexe plug is flush with the surface of the engine block. This is usually done with a freeze plug driver set. SEE PICTURE BELOW

Now how to go about getting to the freeze plug is a whole other story. Each freeze plug presents problems of its own. Some of the can be accessed very easilly. Some of them require that things like starter motors or motor mounts have to be removed to get tho them. Then there are the ones that are located on the back of the engine block which usually require transmission removal to access them.

Where do you pour transmission fluid in for 1998 Chevy Blazer

There's a red handled dip stick located on the rear of passenger's side of the engine, this is the place you put in the fluid and check the level. A small long necked funnel helps, be carful not to overfill it as doing so may cause a major leak from over pressurization.

I need to install an engine block heater in my 2001 Subaru Outyback/Forester 4 cyl. engine. Where does it go? Thanks. Ed!

There are several types of heaters. The easiest one is the type that that takes place of your oil dipstick. Just remove dipstick put dipstick heater in and plug er in ! Easy ! The others involve removing freeze plugs or cutting coolant hoses YUK :(

Where is the trans dipstick for a 05 ford 500 AWD Limited Edition

For the 6 speed auto trans the dipstick is located behind the radiator support, to the left of the air cleaner box. The dipstick is a round yellow plastic towards the bottom of the transmission. The exhaust manifold is slightly above it, so be careful not to burn yourself.
