Question about 1991 Mazda Navajo

2 Answers

Driving home last night the battery light flickered on and the amp gauge swung towards discharge. Truck ran fine but electrical accessories operated slowly. The next day truck started with no problem, light is out and gauge reads charging. This is now going back and forth, light on mostly when idling, flickers when driving. Battery terminals are clean, battery and alternator are five years old. There are no apparent worn or chafed wires. Sears (Die Hard battery) performed an electrical system check, all reads OK. Any ideas ?

It may be just a slack fan belt, if the belt is slack then the charging will show ok until it is put under strain...ie..when driving....check the tension on the belt, it may just need tightened.....hope this was helpful

This sound like a loose conection at the batter or alternator. Check to make sure all the conections are tight and snapped in place securely.

Check grounds. Battery to engine, battery to body and engine to body. Battery to body will corrode. engine to body is usually the first to break.

No one can guess at vehicle problems

Should have gotten to auto zone sooner

You know how old the battery is

This is a devious problem which could lie anywhere. So many things not functioning would perhaps be a ground problem. Maybe take some extra care in cleaning the battery terminals, check if the ground wire is connected to the chassis. Do you have rodents in your area? Maybe they nibbled some wire somewhere?

Lights flicker

When my headlights started to flicker at night, I soon found out it was the battery. It died one night sitting in a friend's driveway with the radio and headlights on. My battery was over 5 years old at the time, and the tow truck driver said I was lucky to have it work that long. I purchased a new battery and the lights no longer flicker at night. Just a suggestion. Hope this helps you.

System says "Battery not charging"

Hi, your alternator has likely packed up. Recommend you remove the alternator and have it tested at a parts chain. If you need instructions, please let me know.

Yestereday the volt light came on last night while driving home the lights started flickering & radio, then just as I was pulling into my driveway the car turned off , I let the car sit for about 5 min...

Hmmm, I'd check a couple things here, my first thought was towards the altenator but then you mentioned it started fine just five minutes after turning off on you. With that I'd check all of my battery cables first. Be certain the are all clean and tight check the cable for any breaks that may lie underneath the insulation. At the battery loosen and remove the connection (always ground first to be removed and last to be installed) clean these connections re-install tighten and apply some petroleum jelly to the top of the terminals to prevent future corrosion. Be certain to check the other ends of the connections too; again be certain clean and tight. If these are good and the problem still exist I'd remove the alternator take to a good auto parts store and have them check (again if you remove the altenator remove the battery ground first) If the battery is older it may be on the way out too. Again this too may be removed and checked at a parts store.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

Guages stop and irratic idle with dimming lights

what probley happened the alternator started to heat up alittle to much and caused the belt to spin on the pulley i would go ahead and get the alternator replaaced as soon as possible. as for the lights dimming and the gauges not working you was running off your battery making the vehicle mess up i would also get your battery checked while your at it.

Lack of power when accelerating

You really should have a code check done. There are numerous items that can give you similar symptoms. Two places to look are the fuel filter (usually overlooked till they gum up, and the throttle position sensor (but test it first with an ohmeter. You will need a manual (vehicle specific ones are available at most larger parts stores and most of those stores also do code testing free)

Alternator and electrical problems ive changed alternator twice, now clicking noise under dash bat. light comes on and dash lights flicker

check all battey connections and system grounds. Check that the battery has 12v and holds properly when load tested. To check charging system, don't disconnect any battery leads...put a volt meter across the battery. when running, you should have at least 12.9v and volts should not drop. (usual reading is generally at or near 13) at idle with all accessories on voltage should be close to that as well. voltage should not exceed 14.Also make sure that drive belt is not slipping.
