1991 toyota 4 runner oil usage - what's normal

1991 toyota 4 runner V6
What's normal oil usage? What if too much oil in engine?

I have 1-2 qts too much oil in the engine (because I'm dumb) and am about to leave on an 880 mile (13 driving hours) interstate road trip. Is this going to cause any mechanical damage (per note in car operator's manual) or just cost me reduced gas milage (as I have been lead to believe). Draining the excess would be simple if I was at home, but I'm not, so I would probably need to pay some unknown guy to do it at a service station. (I have already traveled 440 miles with this "problem" and all seems fine, except for gas milage.)

Thanks,

Ed

Too much oil could make your oil pressure get too high and could blow out some seals. I would pay the $ and have someone drain it back to the level it should be at or it might cause more problems down the road.

That's my opinion.

If you need to, buy a pan and funnel in the housewares dept of any walmart and a cheap wrench of the correct size. You can usually get the front wheels up on a curb to get underneath. Too much oil can be foamed up by the rotating crankshaft and it becomes aerated which severely limits it's ability to lube the bearings. it can also be driven out of the seals and cause other problems. You can either save or discard the extra oil by pouring it into any empty clean container. Most engines are fine with up to a half quart over-full, but beyond that I would not recommend it if you like the car.
Good luck

A common problem in the Toyota V-6 engine was head gasket failure. This doesn't sound like the symptoms that we had with our 4-Runner, but is worth checking. Does the vehicle use fluids, such as coolant. Or does the oil tend to discolor milky or brown?

means it's going out or the transmission oil will need to be changed, check the transmission fluid if it is brown and smells likes onions have the fluid changed and the filter, this may not fix it but you may get lucky, if it's the band or clutch assembly you will have to rebuild transmission.
