Question about 1996 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

The rubber button covers on my 96 ford explorer cruise control swithes have dry rotted. I purchased a motorcraft replacement SW5919. It has a harness attached to both switches. I just need the switches but I can't figure out how to unplug the harness. I don't have the expertise to pull the whole steering wheel. To replace the switches I need to disconnect the battery and take two bolts out of the column for the air bag then just unscrew the swithces and replace. So what is the secret method to release the electric harness?

You will need a small screw driver to gently disconnect the switches from the harness. They are clipped on.Locate the clip side of connector and pry off gently.Good luck.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. This will cause the idle speed to be high. Additionally most cruise controls are operated by vacuum pressure. Look around the intake manifold for disconnected rubber hoses. May have popped off from dry rot or stretched out etc. Find the vacuum leak and fix it, both problems should go away.

My horn blows after I install air bag

You'll have to take it back apart and find out what is shorting out the switch, or applying pressure to the switch without pushing on the bag cover.

My cruise control works intermittenly. no pattern. sounds like a relay but where?

in the fuesbox underneath the hood (most likely, might be under dash) there will be a series of relays, the diagram on the fusebox cover will tell you which to replace, although intermittent issues generally do not point to relays, relays fail once, contacts in your cruise control buttons, and wiring issues are more likely at fault

How to change the Starter on a 1989 toyota camry

Gasoline Engines
  1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.

Fig. 5: Exploded view of the starter motor mounting-5S-FE engine shown, others similar
  1. On 1992-96 models with cruise control, remove the battery.
  1. Also on 1992-96 models with cruise control, remove the actuator cover and disconnect the wiring harness. Remove the three bolts and then lift out the cruise control actuator. Remove the bracket from beneath the actuator and put aside.
  1. Peel the rubber boot away and remove the nut and disconnect the negative battery cable from the magnetic switch terminal on the starter. Disconnect the electrical connector also located on the magnetic switch.
  1. Support the starter by hand and remove the two mounting bolts.
  1. Remove the starter from the transaxle.
To install:
  1. Place the starter motor in the transaxle and support by hand.
  2. Install the two mounting bolts and tighten them to 29-31 ft. lbs. (39-42 Nm).
  3. Connect the connector to the magnetic switch. Place the battery cable on the switch terminal and install the nut. Tighten the nut and position the rubber boot over the cable.
  4. Using the ignition switch, "bump'' the starter over a few times and check for proper operation.

Hope helps.
