Question about 2001 Hyundai Elantra

1 Answer

Having the same problem the other guy described.

I've changed the O2 sensor a number of times and just had the Speed Sensor replaced as well.

I took the car to Hyundai and they pulled these codes:

P1529 TCM Request for Malfunction Lamp on Signal
P0422 Main Catalyst System Efficiency Bank
P0456 Evaporative Emission System Leak (very small leak)
P0455 Evaporative Emission System Leak (Large Leak)
P0720 Output Speed Sensor (Pulse Generator B)
P0715 Input? Turbine Speed Sensor "A" Circuit

Can anyone make sense of all this? I need to get the car inspected in NY and can't pass if the check engine light remains on.

First of all, these codes are what are called "Powertrain Trouble Codes' (that's what the "P" means P=Powertrain). TCM Request (Transmission Control Module = TCM). The request was to turn on the 'Check Engine" light.
P0720 - output speed sensor circuit malfunction
P0715 - Input speed sensor (turbin speed) circuit malfunction
P0442 - Evaporative Emission System Leak (Small Leak)
P0455 - Evaporative Emission System Leak (Large Leak)
Check fuel filler cap problems - for Evap Emiss leaks
Replace the pulse generators & have the trans fluid replaced/flushed.
The Main Catalyst System Efficiency Bank 1 Is P0420, not P0442
If you had P0420 code, the catalytic converter is shot... and that's an expensive component.

according to your codes your O2 sensor closes to the motor by cylinder 1 is malfunctioningp0135. youalso have a bad wheel sensor right front.this is causing the trans to shift wrong c0035 whick gives you the p1811 code (long shift) if you replace that o2 sensor ( there are usually like 4 on a V6) and replace the front passenger side wheel sensor and reader plate then you problems should correct and the lights should go off after you run the car for a bit. hope it helps.

Had o2 sensor bank 2 # 2 replaced , 1 week later engine light is back on . where is this sensor located and why does this one keep going bad?

It is possible that the sensor was not bad to begin with. Some times another problem will cause the O2 sensor to show a condition when all it is doing is what it is supposed to and a lot of guys will change it. I ran into this myself. I had a code so I had it read. O2 sensor showed a lean condition so the guy suggested I change it. Except it didn`t say which one and there were 4 of them. Didin`t make much sense to me. Turned out I had a bad lower intake gasket which caused the lean fuel mixture because of the un-metered air. All the sensor did was tell me the truth. It did its job. I know this don`t answer your question but this is where a good mechanic comes in and the sensor is located in the exhaust pipe close to the catalytic converter.

2002 Jeep Liberty P0174 code and mech has changed the o2 sensor

Can't tell you exactly what is wrong but the one thing you said is of concern...Map sensor should not be full of oil. If it is, I'd want to know why. In finding the reason for that, you may also find the reason why you are having a problem.
Jeep uses two kinds of engine crank venting. you either have a pcv valve or an orifice controlled system. If either are obstructed it can overpressure the crankcase and cause all kinds of problems.
Years of experience tells me this isn't something I can guess at and be 100% sure I have the right answer but based on what you said, I'd look there first!

Engine light is on...

P0137--O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage-Bank 1 Sensor 2

P0139--O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response-Bank 1 Sensor 2

P0152--O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage-Bank 2 Sensor 1

P0300--Random Multiple Cylinder Misfire

I would suspect that the camshaft position sensor is bad. This is a quote from the tech manual:

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) uses the camshaft position sensor to manage sequential fuel injection and as part of misfire diagnosis. The PCM constantly monitors the number of pulses on the signal circuit. The PCM compares the number of camshaft sensor reference pulses and the number of crankshaft position sensor reference pulses received. If the PCM receives an incorrect number of pulses, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) should be stored in the PCM. Some PCM systems will then default to multi-port or "gang-fire" injector operation. The camshaft position sensor signal is required to sequence the injector operation to the proper cylinder timing. If the camshaft position sensor or circuit is faulty, most engines will start. However, the PCM misfire diagnostic will likely be affected.

The part costs $50.....simple to change. It is NOT the O2 sensors so don't go wasting money on those. They are being affected due to related symptoms....they fault because the problem is happening upstream.

One thing to check is the fuel pressure regulator.
If the diaphram is leaking it will cause gas to be pulled into the vacuum system causing lots of white smoke and extreme rough running.

2000 vw bug having problems

Sounds like possible block in catalyst or broken up and blocked catalyst or oxygen sensor fault causing fuel/air mixture confusion if you take first o2 sensor out of exhaust manifold/pipe and see if performance back then this will confirm blockage although will be slightly noisy while testing cos sensor removed.

I have the same problem, I replace the O2 sensors and nothing??????? I have no idea what to do to take care of the problem. I have just ordered a new and improved throttle body. according to the Mazda6 forum, the throttle body on the 03 model was junk. I'll keep you posted.

On a side note, I was transferred to Richmond, VA for Columbus, OH about an 8 hour drive. I have driven back and forth about 4 times with the check engine light on and have had no problems. my email is if you find a solution please let me know and I will do the same.
