It' not a timing chain but a timing belt which is set during engine tuning and the tensioner bolt takes care of the adjustment by the position of the bolt which locks it in place when the timing is corrected......sodeep

Where are timing chain tensioners? I need to change them.Does left one have an electrical connection? Thanks

The timing chain tensioners are located with the timing chain inside the timing cover and usually are not changed unless the timing chain assembly is replaced. Why would you change them?

2003 ford explorer with a loud metal rattling noise sometimes it will vibrate too

Could be cam chain rattle. Famous for sloppy chains and inferior tensioners. Starts about 100k and downhill from there. Could try an engine flush as tensioners may be sludged. I have a 4.0L with a rattle at start up but stops after 5 seconds. Chain is shot.

There is a ticking noise that won't quit. I've heard valve problems to timing chains. Plus that there are 6 timing chains on my vehicle. I have a 2003 ford explorer 4.0 sohc. someone please tell me how...

3 chains ONLY (1 chain from the crank to idler sprocket/ 2 from idler sprocket to cams). This ticking noise are usually associated with poor oil flow through the upper part of the engine or sticking lifters. If this vehicle has over 80k miles, have the oil pan and oil pick-screen cleaned!! If the problems not severe yet, it will go away!!

How hard is it to replace timing chain on ford explorer 2003 4.0 i heard it has 2 chain front abd rear

There are 2 different 4.0L type engines on Ford Explorers if it is the VIN letter E (8th number reading left to right) then yes it has a timing chain on the back and there are 3 timing chains on the front. You will need special tools to hold the timing in place whille you change the chains. You can buy them from several different tool manufacturers. I bought mine from Snap-on but it was several hundred dollars and came with many different adapters for several different engines. But be prepared to spend a little money they aren't cheap even the small sets. Depending upon how much you'll use them you may want to see how much it would cost to have it done or try to find someone to loan you some. If you do then it's just a matter of following the procedure in the maintenance manual. As far as how hard is it? It isn't rocket science but I would make sure you read over the procedure in a repair manual, see if you can get the special tools you will need and depending upon your mechanical aptitude determine if it's something you want to tackle yourself. Good luck.

Considering buying 2003 ford explorer sport with 97,000 miles on it. Have heard that SOHC engines have problems with timing chains. Any advice?

Best to read all the explorer complaints here on fix-ya. Fords ar a money pit. And Chevy cavaliers exceed their allowance of problems. If you get it, I hope it serves you well and you are pleased with it.
