Question about 2003 Mercury Sable

1 Answer

My transmission went out on my 2003 Sable.

The mechanic said it was torque converter. I had the extended warranty and had it fixed. I also have a problem with my air conditioner running only on high. They fixed it along with my transmission and two months later it was not working again.

Some repair shops give you a 90 day warranty because the parts they install have that warranty.

Try taking back you car if it has only been 2 months or 60 days. You can make a good argument because of the parts warranty.

Two codes coming up on car even after fixing alot on car now need to figure out low cost ways to fix P0744 & P0722 code issues spent 1,800 on car & have spent 1,400 already in parts & labor.

you need a better mechanic that traces ALL of the possibilities of each code, not just read the code and trow in a part hoping that it's fixed ~ it can be wiring as well, not just plug in a new part as mentioned on the 2nd trouble code to the vehicle speed sensor

P0744 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Intermittent

P0722 Output Speed Sensor No Signal

the first of the 2 looks to be more intensive to trace and find out the problem & the 0722 is the easier job for an intermediate mechanic to trace the wiring for continuity

torque converter clutch stuck or not working properly

Torque converter

Transmission will be fine. The torque converter is the oil filled automatic clutch that transmits power for engine to gearbox. If it only does it between second and third, then the transmission is faulty, not the torque converter. You want both changing. The money is in the labour, so economically it makes sense to do both. At 91,000 miles, you need a new car.

2003 sable, How hard is it to replace the torque converter

I agree. It is not that hard to remove the transmission, but putting it back in is much harder, because it is heavy but delicate to install at the same time. The torque converter is not the problem. It does not have to be the transmission pump either, but the shaft that powers the pump. But again, too delicate to suggest doing unless you were good enough so that you would not have to ask.

These codes comes out P0741

Your torque converter is not locking up.
The solution is to have the torque converter replaced and the transmission serviced.
Hopefully, you are still under warranty and can get it repaired it for free.
If not, it can get pretty expensive.

2003 Mercury Sable AX4N Transmission Problems

I have a 2003 Mercury Sable as well - my transmission went out with only 52,000 miles. I checked with Ford company and they do not have any recalls on the transmission, however I think it odd that you had the same problem with the same model with in the past 6 months.
