Check the little hose that runs from the pressure transducer to the egr and usually the elbow there is colapsed od torn open on that little hose, the transducer is disc shaped and right above or next to the egr, hope this helps

  • Efstathios Govas Oct 09, 2009

sounds like the egr is opening too soon, might be a bad solenoid or pressure transducer, but you should have the codes cleared and see if they come back first

402 code emision light on

Hi there:

DTC P0402 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow (EGR) Excessive Detected

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It is part of the vehicle emmissions system, and is used to reduce combustion temperature and pressure to control Oxides of Nitrogen. There are generally three parts to the EGR system: the EGR valve, an actuator solenoid, and a differential pressure sensor (DPF). These things work together to deliver the correct amount of recirculation based on engine temperature, load, etc. The P0402 code means that OBD detected an excessive amount of EGR.

Symptoms

You may notice drivability problems such as the engine may surge off idle. There may also be other symptoms.

Causes

A code P0402 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:

  • The DPFE (differential pressure) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
  • There is a blockage in the EGR (most likely carbon buildup)
  • The EGR valve is faulty
  • The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum

Possible Solutions

With a P0402, it is common for people to replace the EGR valve, only to have the problem return. The most likely solution is to replace the DPFE sensor.

  • Check the voltage at the DPFE sensor both at idle and when the EGR is open
  • Replace the DPFE sensor

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Grand carvan gives p402 code

This is not a cut and dry fault code. This means that more than one thing wrong can set the code in the computers memory. Here is the low down on the P0402 fault code. This is from the OBD2 fault code diagnostic book.

P0402 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected
Symptoms - Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Possible engine hesitation
Possible causes - EGR solenoid valve harness is open or shorted
- EGR solenoid valve circuit poor electrical connection
- EGR volume control valve stuck closed
- Dead (Weak) battery
- Faulty EGR temperature sensor and circuit
- Faulty EGR Valve
- EGR passage clogged
- Exhaust gas leaks

2000 Honda Accord EGR Valve Error P0401

Jason,
-after you change the part you have to reset/clear the code

-this can be done by either:
(1) using the OBD2 code reader that Autozone used OR since option 2 (below) is very quick
(2) disconnecting the battery for about 30 seconds (this will delete all codes/radio presets/etc) but it will also clear the 'check engine' code
-this is what I do AFTER i write down my radio station presets :)

-hopefully the new EGR valve resolves your issue after you CLEAR the code
...but that code just means a an insufficient amount of Exhaust Gas recirculation (pressure difference) used to keep the emissions in check
-if it comes back, then there are a few other fixes to try also

-let me know if you need further assistance
-please remember to rate me `fix-ya`if it works
thanks

I HAVE A 1998 FORD TAURUS CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. HAD IT READ AT AUTO ZONE, SAID IT WAS AN EGR VALVE. I REPLACE THIS ABOUT 14 MONTHS AGO.

The EGR is one piece in a larger system. Most autozone type places only read the code and match it with a code sheet. This does not troubleshoot the entire system. It is possible the new egr valve you repaired actually is broken. But check the Vaccuum lines and hose around the valve, if broken or loose or even missing, this would cause the same problem. Find a friend or aquaintance with a snap-on style computer to pull up the exact data you need.
