first check bulbs and fuses if no success the reverse light switch is located on gearbox sometimes wires come off and other times faulty and need replacing a test lamp on the switch will help to tell you whether or not power is coming out when in reverse to make the lights work

Sounds like the shift cable is bad. To check unhook it from trans. With someone in the car. Start the car have them hold down the brake and see if you can shift the gears from under the hood. If you can the cable is bad, if not the problem is in the trans.

Number one cause of this is bad transmission fluid.
So far, 7 times out of 8, fluid change has fixed a problem exactly like yours.
The A604 transmission uses ATF+3 or ATF+4 ONLY...do NOT trust 'some other ATF + additives' or anything like it, you will end up regretting it.
ATF+3 and ATF+4 are trademarks, so cannot be used without meeting the spec. I've had good luck (and best prices) with Wal-Marts Supertech brand (cheapest ATF+4 I've found)
You'll need 5.5 quarts to do a standard fluid change (doesn't empty out the torque converter). System capacity is 9.5 quarts, but you'll need quite a bit more than that to do a full flush. When you're done, and have refilled the tranny, start the engine, wait 10 or 20 seconds, keep your foot on the brake, put the van in drive for 10 or 20 seconds, back in park, then check the fluid again.
Generally, doing a change, driving another couple hundred miles, and changing it again works very well.
You'll have to drop the entire transmission pan to change the filter, you'll want to do that to check for excessive metal shavings and such anyway. Don't forget to remove the old O-ring from the filter connection, and don't forget to put the new one on. There's no drain plug on the tranny pan, so have a big catchpan handy, and expect to have to do some careful prying to get the old gasket to break loose. (the bolts are 10MM by the way)
The second time you change the fluid, it's simpler to use some aquarium tubing down the Trans fluid fill tube as a siphon. Takes pretty much overnight to empty the pan this way, but easier and safer than dropping the pan, and you actually get a little more old fluid out.
Do the same fill, start, brake/drive, recheck as above.
