Glow Plug Diagnosis

I just brought my Chevy 2500 HD W/ 6.6 Diesel in and had it diagnosed at my local shop and the diagnosis came up as code P0380 Glow Plug issue. Is this something that I can handle? The truck starts and runs fine, I just don't want to get stuck in BFE. Thanks

Fuel Cut Solenoid: Testing and Inspection
An inoperative shutdown solenoid can cause a no-start condition. Disconnect solenoid harness connector and with ignition switch in the "ON"
position momentarily touch solenoid harness connector to solenoid connector. If a "click" sound is heard, the solenoid circuit is operating
properly. If "click" is not heard, the system should be diagnosed as follows:
1. With test lamp connected to ground and the ignition switch in the "ON" position, backprobe the shutdown harness connector. If the test lamp
does not light check for open circuit form the ignition switch to the solenoid.
2. If the test lamp lights, check the ground circuit between solenoid stud and injection pump cover to see if connectors are clean and tight. If the
connections are not clean and tight repair and retest.
3. If the ground circuit is "OK", remove the injection pump cover. Connect a jumper wire between solenoid ground connector and ground. With
the ignition switch in the "ON" position, momentarily touch shutdown solenoid harness connector to shutdown solenoid terminal. If solenoid
operates, check for internal injection pump problem.
4. If the solenoid will not operate, replace the shutdown solenoid.

Fuel Cut Solenoid: Service and Repair
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT:
1. Remove pump cover.
2. Terminal contact nuts.
3. Solenoid.
INSTALL OR CONNECT:
1. Solenoid in the pump cover.
- On the shutdown solenoid, make sure that the linkage is free.
- On the cold advance solenoid, make sure that the plunger is centered so that it will contact the check ball in the fitting.
2. Insulating washers on the terminal studs.
3. Terminal nuts and tighten to 1 Nm (9 in lbs).
4. Pump cover.
5. Inspect solenoid operation prior to installing the pump cover. Use a 12 volt DC power source.

P1518 CHEVROLET - Electronic Throttle Module to PCM Communication

Condition/Concern:
Customers may have a concern of lack of power and engine light on. DTCs set will almost always contain a P1518 and may contain any of the following (P1516, P2108, P0220, P0120, U0107). An improperly torqued TAC module ground may be at fault. The Ground is listed as G104 on TAC module schematic which is incorrectly labeled on SI document ID 855376. The correct ground is G103. The locator for SI states that G103 is located on the left hand side which is incorrect. However, there have been field reports stating that G104 has also corrected this condition. G104 is a horizontal bolt in the rear of the left head and extremely difficult to reach. G104 should also be tightened at the same time.

There have also been field cases where ground G110 on the outer drivers side frame rail caused a P1518 code and an intermittent connection at splice 102 on the intake.

All published SI diagnostics should be followed in addition to following the recommendation listed.
Recommendation/Instructions:

Tighten ground G103 located behind the right cylinder head (passenger side) just below the head and mounted into the block. The ground uses a 13 mm bolt head mounted vertically to the engine block just above the bell housing.

• DTC P1518 sets if the battery voltage is low. If the customer's concern is slow cranking or no crank because battery voltage is low, ignore DTC P1518. Clear any DTCs from memory that may have set from the low battery voltage condition.
• DTC P1518 sets when there is a short to B+ on the TAC module ground circuit. Inspect the fuses for the circuits that are in the TAC module harness--i.e. cruise, brake. An inspection of the fuses may lead you to the circuit that is shorted to the TAC module ground circuit.
• DTC P1518 sets if the TAC module ignition feed circuit is shorted to a B+ supply circuit. The TAC module stays powered-up when the ignition switch is turned OFF. When the ignition switch is turned ON, the TAC module is powered-up before the PCM. DTC P1518 sets because no communication is detected by the TAC module from the PCM. Inspect related circuits for being shorted to a B+ supply circuit.
• Inspect the TAC module power and ground circuits and the TAC module/PCM serial data circuits for intermittent connections.
• Inspect the TAC module connectors for signs of water intrusion. If water intrusion occurs, multiple DTCs may set without any circuit or component conditions found during diagnostic testing.
• When the TAC module detects a problem within the TAC system, more than 1 TAC system related DTC may set. This is due to the many redundant tests run continuously on this system. Locating and repairing an individual condition may correct more than 1 DTC. Remember this if you review the stored information in Capture Info.


Conditions for Setting the DTC
• The TAC module detects that the predicted and the actual throttle positions are not within a calibrated range of each other.
• The PCM and the TAC cannot determine the throttle position.
• Both of the TP sensors are invalid.
• All of the above conditions are met for more than 1 second.



Condition/Concern:
A vehicle may be brought into the dealer for a reduced power message, and DTCs P0120, P0220, P1516, P2101, or P2135.

The Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) / throttle body type trouble codes, may be caused by a loose wiring crimp at the throttle body connector, or a broken throttle body circuit.

Recommendation/Instructions:
Complete the current SI diagnostics for any symptoms or trouble codes found. If a intermittent T/P or TAC module type code is occurring complete the inspections below.

Inspect all related throttle body terminals for a loose wiring crimp. The loose crimp may be difficult to find, and the poor connection will be between the terminal and the copper strands of the wire. Wiggle test the individual throttle body circuits to see if the concern can be duplicated.
Inspect the related circuits for broken wires inside the insulation. The outer wire insulation may look fine, but the internal copper strands may be partially broken. Breaks in the wires usually occur within 1 to 4 inches of the throttle body connector. Wiggle testing may also induce a trouble code to set.
On C/K trucks complete SI procedures for voltage drop on grounds G103 and G104. Grounds G103 or G104 may be loose or corroded.

If a terminal crimp or a broken wire has been found, repair or replace only the circuits involved.

the hard starting is the glow plugs are not all working and this is a simple job of testing them and renewing the defective ones ,but the noise in the engine is a bit more suspicious as i have no idea if this is a common rail diesel injection or a traditional injection `pump with a electrical connection on one of the injectors .What i would suggest here is to ask a local mechanic to have a look for you then post the diagnosis so it can be confirmed this is a correct diagnosis but you must appreciate that without hearing the noise myself iam at a loss as to be able to diagnose the cause .

Glow Plug system diagnosis


I HAD SAME CODE TO BUT NOTE THE CODES MIS READING DUE TO THIS Check under seat unplug control module see if it is wet with fluid . cost me $138.00 fee.
Engine light on than next day off may 2 day then on at same place drive kid to school.
issue with transmission fluid wicking up the harness into the control module and causing the module to malfunction. Usually, the harness from the transmission to the ETC module is replaced and the module is replaced provided the leak is repaired. In some cases this may be more than is actually needed but it usually fixes the concern. Transmission fluid does not actually damage the module and can be flushed away with board cleaning solvent or electrical contact cleaner as a first attempt. Always repair the leak before replacing a module.

It sounds like your some of your glow plugs may be burned out or the glow plug system may not be cycling like it should. Pick up Haynes Diesel Engine Repair Manual, part #10330 at your auto parts store and it will walk you through diagnosis and repair easily and inexpensively.It costs about $20. Hope this helps.

1987 chevy 6.2 liter surburban glow plug going in & out .sometimes it will allow me to start sometimes it wont.


Pick up a book called Haynes Diesel Engine Repair Manual, part no. 10330, at your auto parts store. It deals with all the early diesel engines includung the 6.2. It has a good diagnosis section and how to repair. It also has tricks to prevent some problems from recurring. Hope this helps.

Working on 2006 dodge sprinter 3500 trubo diesel with engine light on put scanner on and got 2 codes, P0671 cylinder N.1 glow plug circuit and P0380 glow plug circ perf also intake air heater relay N.1...


I did this exact thing.. I see your date of posting is a while ago, however let me know how you ended up.. If you leave the battery connected while installing the relay you can short it out causing the problem all over again.. also there is a couple points that run along that wiring harness that are known to rub through.. let me know how you did!
