Question about 1988 Nissan 300ZX

My car is steaming water out of the engine. Its making a lot of steam and not running hot until the water is out. I have new radiator hoses what could it be?

    description is a bit vague, but sounds like a head gasket. but, check thermostat first.

Sir there are two possible reasons for your problem... get your radiator checked. And use a radiator coolent instead of water and get your engine oil changed.

Bad seals? Bad water pump? Is a turbo model? Turbos can cause extreme pressure.

If the steam is rising from the radiator and not from the overflow tank or hose then you do have a leak.. in the radiator. check for a cracked tank or fitting where the hoses connect. If it is making steam the guage is probably defective. Find out where that steam is coming from ! If the car is making steam the rad fan should probably be running.. I do not know about your particular car but some times the secon fan only comes on with A/C use or extream heat.

STEAM COMING OFF ENGINE


check top radiator hose goes to thermostat housing sound like its leaking if your engine leaking from left driver side on top of engine it has to be top radiator thermostat hose leaking.wait until engine cool down replace top radiator hose see if coolant leaking still occur if so you could have radiator leak.

Antifreeze leaking out and making car smoke


LOOK UNDER HOOD AROUND RADIATOR AREA FOR LEAKS AND CHECK FOR LEAKING RADIATOR HOSES.CHECK TOP RADIATOR HOSE TO THERMOSTAT IF HOSE LEAKS THERE YOU WILL SEE A LOT OF SMOKE AND STEAM WHERE COOLANT SPRAYING ON HOT ENGINE.

Well, your vehicle is overheating. Are either of the electric fans running when the vehicle is turned on? Are you leaking any coolant around the water pump? When the vehicle is cooled off, feel of your main radiator hoses, the top one should be soft and pliable and the bottom one should be more rigid. It should feel like it has ribs in it. If it feels like the "ribs" in the bottom radiator hose are flattened and not round then you need to replace it. Also check the water level in the radiator when the vehicle is cooled off completely. You may just be really low on water. The overflow tank is only accurate when the radiator is full and working properly. Does the water blow out the overflow violently or just steam. If it is boiling out violently then you most likely have a bad head gasket. Check the exhaust when it is running and see if it is dripping water or releasing a lot of water vapor. If either is yes than you probably need head gaskets. Start with the easy problems and work your way up. Check every heater and water hose on the vehicle for leaks. Also take a flashlight and look all around the engine for steam after it has started overheating ( shut the car off first so you can hear the leaks and find them easier.). Don't take too long running it hot. It is mostly an aluminum engine and you can do major damage overheating it too much.

Running hot if you dont put water or antifreeze in it everytime you drive it, smoke and steam comes from the engine when stopped, one fan wont come on but its not the fuse,etc..


Your first task is to locate where the smoke and steam is issuing from. The possible sources are (from cheapest to most expensive) Heater core hoses or radiator hoses or thermostat housing gasket failed or radiator or head gasket.

If you can find where the steam, or water is coming from, I cant tell you what to do then. The second fan will not come on until really hot, usually only one fan runs.

did it steam from under the hood or was water running from it when you cut it off? If water ran from it when you cut it off in the middle like the front that is your water pump. if steam was coming from the hood you could have a busted hose. if radiator is boiling hot could be your thermostat. if water is not holding in your radiator then you may have a busted radiator or blown a gasket. if your motor is still good do not drive if it runs hot you can blow a head gasket or the motor and to get it fixed a lot more money and you don't want that. as you put water in your vehicle make sure it is running while you are doing this. hope this helps

Your overflow hose is at the first tier after the seal on the radiator cap. The first thing I would check is the cap gasket, then make sure the cap is completely installed, push down hard and turn until it locks into position. If your water pump was bad, you would either be leaking water from the pump, or your car would be running hot. Usually, when you have steam/water coming out the overflow, if it is not a problem with the cap, then you are indeed running hot. If the thermostat is not opening or is stuck in the closed positiion, it will not cause your radiator to overflow, however if it is sticking closed and allowing your car to overheat then opening at a higher pressure, it could happen. Check the components in this order, gasket, cap installation, then thermostat, (you can replace the thermostat for about 10 dollars. Good luck

My 1990 subaru legacy was running fine-I went to the store less than a mile away and when I got home something was leaking from underneath the car and there was steam coming from under the hood..i don't...


Just because it was not hot to the touch, does not mean it is not a coolant loss problem----if the coolant is so low, there may not be enough to make the radiator hot (though usually the steam in the system will).
...a stuck thermostat can also let the engine overheat while the radiator remains cool (the fluid only circulates within the engine and is stopped from getting to the radiator.
...likewise a hose could have burst below and let the coolant out, over heating the engine, and the steam going out the ruptured/popped off hose; would look underneath..
...when cool, check the level in the radiator (likely empty),
...and less than a mile away, may not have ever heated the radiator, though usually only a mile to heat up the coolant
...of course there is always sabotage
...and water pump failure, (so no water circulated) causing overheating and no radiator heat, and possibly enough pressure to blow off a hose, but usually the radiator cap relief spring would allow pressure to escape (and that steam would heat up the radiator on the way---but if only steam in the radiator, it would cool off quickly after venting, because no more water in the radiator to hold the heat. all depending on climate,temp and further details , symptoms..

My 1995 jeep grandcherokee laredo overheats very quickly (less than 5 mins). I removerd the radiator cap and inserted water. Suddnely beside the battery smoke started coming out. The car was turned off....


You have a leak in your radiator or radiator hose.
That is the reason why your engine tuns hot very quick.
Because there is not enough cooling liquid.
Also the reason why when you refill it can steam because the water leaks on the hot engine components.

PS NEVER remove the radiator cap when the engine is over heated or hot,
you will lower the boiling point because of the reduce in pressure and that can make the cooling liquid spout out as hot steam,
with the risk of severe burn injuries.

Its runnining close to hot on temp gauge and after i parked it from driving home fom work i saw some smoke coming from under the hood


If smoke, you may have a leak in a hose. When cool, check for water marks usually coming from the connection to the radiator. Another thing to do but may be dangerous is to load up the radiator with water and start the engine, let it run for about 15min for it to heat up and look for water spray. Also, when parked, is there a puddle of water under the car?

Also, I would check the water level in the radiator (never open when hot), to see if i need to add water. Don't look at the reservoir as a reference. It could be just low.

The key here is you think there may be smoke coming from the hood.

Another thing, if the radiator is full of water, then it could be your thermostat. it is usually located at the end of the top hose which runs from the radiator to the engine. In this picture, you are looking at the top of the engine looking down. This is the location of the Thermostat. If your vehicle is close to over heating, this valve could be getting stuck.

As a test, remove the thermostat and try driving it around to see if it gets close to overheating.
