I have a 1987 Mazda B2000 pick up. My shifter will not fit back on my newly re-built transmission. Do any other shifters work with this model as I am unable to locate an original for replacement.

I'm sure you have checked the shifter and shifter spring,,...Shifters can be rebuilt also....Make sure your clutch linkage is properly adjusted...The clutch is non adjustable...They may have got air in the hydraulic lines while removing and installing...This would give you a spongy pedal ...Most shifters in order to put it in reverse you push over and up or over and down......if shifter is loose and wobbly it won't have enough force to push the reverse shift rod....However if shifter is in great shape it sounds like the reverse shift rod could be hanging up and not sliding the shift fork...It could be the rebuilders fault......Reverse gear is the largest gear in the transmission and it is located at the back of TRANS which means it will require more force to put in reverse.......I would take it back to rebuilders shop and tell them something isn't right with going to reverse gear...if you wait too long they will think it is something you may have done by incorrect shifting.....

91 nissan sentra classic key is stuck in ignition

The tumblers have probably collapsed. They are brass and they wear out and fall into the space between the key stock and the cylinder. The switch may have a combination of functions and it is called a neutral safety switch. IT could control starting from park and neutral, turning on the back up lights in reverse.

Go to eBay and search for a saturn shifter bushing kit. these are less than 20 bucks, happens frequently on saturn. same kit fits all S series. if you can pull the console, you can put this in.
if you are in a hurry parts stores may have them in stock too.

I am assuming that you have a 4-speed manual transmission?
If the shifter mechanism had a lockout built into it, then you will have to repair it or figure out some way to disable it before you will be able to shift the transmission into reverse gear.
Another option would be to replace the shifter mechanism entirely.

I'd like to replace the stock shifter knob (or

Usually there is a nut on the bottom of a shift knob that needs to be loosened, then the knob just screws off. Use a wrench, if it's hexagonal, if it's just round or there is no nut it may just screw off. It will be really tight though, be prepared to have to really crank on it to get it loose. The new one should just thread back on. You may need to install a nut on the bottom to adjust the rotation of any pattern or gear shift diagram on the new one.

I need to know how to troubleshoot the BTSI system. I don't think the solenoid is bad, just missing voltages. The fuse is fine and the brake lights work. I don't know what to do...

it is usualy the shift interlock mechanism that fails.the jimmy has an actuator mounted at the bottom of the steering column so it knows when the brake pedal is pressed and releases the gear would be suprised as sometimes it is just the mechanism that get stock in back of the shifter.remove the cover around the shifter and spray some rust off and play with the shifter.the button behind the shifter gets jammed.try it out.its a simple diagnosis.

Manual 2001 sentra I wanted to replace the shift knob

you may just need to put some more elbow grease in to it. Stock shifters have the tendency to really stick after a while. Be sure though to turn counter clockwise.

1992 grand am stift knob

In my experience, in general most automatic car shifters that are in the middle of the car have a slot on the back side of the shifter. You may need to press your finger on the back side to 'feel' the slot. Use a nail or needle nose pliers to pull out the C looking clip. Becarefull because the shift knob button (that you have to press to move the shifter) is spring loaded so if you don't hold on to the whole assembly things might go flying. If you really want to be cautious put a bag over the shifter when you remove it.
