The clutch is a self adjusting hydraulic system check the clutch fluid res. It should be located on the firewall on the drivers side close to the brake booster. If it is full then you might check to see if the clutch slave cyl. is working if it is then you will have to drop the tranny and replace the clutch.

Cannot get it in gear with out jamming it in and it grinds going in.

Year make model?? I'm suspecting a manual transmission. Most hard shifts/hard to get in gear are due to a clutch problem. Suspect a worn clutch/defective slave cylinder/defective master cylinder/ improperly adjusted clutch cable just to name a few

Why the manual gearbox cannot easily changed to the drive gear? why it is hard?

if it is manual transmission and hard to put it on gear, have clutch checked for adjustment, bleed the hydraulic system, or possible clutch failure.

Stick in 1st gear have to pull it hard all others are fine

Hi,
There two possibility of breakdown in that part, one is the cable might have loosen up and needs some adjustment in the shifting stick gear base. A local mechanic can adjust it and check why it become loose.
The second is, synchronizer gear failure. That part is inside the transmission, it is made of brass, and the gear teeth might have worn out. To check it, needs to pull down the whole transmission and opening it to check the gears. Replacing that gear is a must!
That gear broke down when somebody forcefully shifting the gear in first without the clutch assistant.
Forcing your car to start at 2nd gear from stop will wear down your clutch assembly, so be very carefull don't over rev the engine.
Hope that helps you.
Thanks for using FixYa!

Going hard into gear and sometimes strips while going into gear on a 5 speed manuel 97 corolla

If its hard to get in all the gears I would try adjusting the clutch first .Look at the clutch cable and linkage to make sure its not bound up or loose. If you have a hydraulic clutch system make sure the fluid is full and the slave cylinder isn't leaking. If all that checks out ok then I recommend taking it to your mechanic and have him inspect the clutch and trans for proper operation.

1998 Saturn SC1 manuel stick is hard to shift into 1st & 2nd gear

Try to double clutch the clutch pedal. How to double clutch; push the clutch in moving the stick to neutral, then release the clutch and then push it back in and shift into first or second gear. If it works then it is not the shift linkage and could be a clutch adjustment. First how far do you have to release the clutch pedal until the clutch plate starts to engage? If only an inch or so the clutch pedal needs to be adjusted, which is an easy fix (this is more common). The other possible problems could be the clutch plate, throwout bearing of syncros could be bad. If it is one of the previous problems double clutching should buy you some time.

Have to change clutch plate on suzuki grand vitara ,its hard to put in gears

If it's hard to get into gear you should check the clutch is disengaging properly.
Before changing the clutch plate, check that the clutch throw-out is adjusted correctly and the actuating hydraulics/levers have the correct amount of travel.

Hard to Shift Gears?

How is the clutch adjustment?
Is it releasing fully?
If you have a hydraulic clutch....is the brake fluid level in the clutch master cyl beside the brake master cyl full?
If you have the cable clutch.....is there only 1/2 inch of play..... if you pull up on the cable at the transmission end of the cable?
