Question about 2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT

2 Answers

Car makes a clicking sound when I try to start it. Battery has been changed, but not new. Will start when boosted. Have left the car running for an hour, turned it off and re-started it without problem, but won't start the next day. Could it be 2 faulty batteries? What other problem could it be?

It could be 2 faulty batteries if they were not replaced new. It also could be that the alternator is not properly charging the battery. Many local parts stores will check your battery and alternator for free. I would give that a try.

Have the battery tested or better yet get a new one.
Make sure the cable terminals are clean and free of any corrosion, that causes high resistance and could keep a good battery from starting your engine.
If the new battery goes dead in a day have the vehicle tested for a parasitic drain on the electrical system.

Battery good, alternator charging, starter new, only starts with boost

it sounds like you might have a problem on the starter relay. check the voltages going to and leaving it. It should drop no lower than 9.5 volts during start.

Really sounds like the battery terminals need cleaned.
If it will jump then your new battery is not connected.

I believe i have a weak battery on my car when i tried starting the car after it had sat a month it was dead. I boosted it and it started and run fine. I bought a trickle charger and put it on the battery....

The charger shouldn't have hurt the battery but corrosion is caused by fumes from the battery being charged or used. If you know the cable ends are clear, the battery probably has a dead cell and will need replaced. Most parts stores will do a load test on the battery for free.

My car suddenly won't start. There is a constant clicking noise and the dash lights are going on and off in synch with the clicking noise. It doesn't appear to be the battery. Any idea what the problem...

Sound like a low battery, lights left on or not charging. Try boosting it. If starts and then stalls the alternator not charging. If it starts and keeps running its probably a low battery or a drain.

I have a very strange issue with my 93 Saturn that i just cant figure out. This is what is happening. The car starts and runs just fine when I boost the car. Then when the battery gets enough power and I...

it is the ecm, it sits there on all 91-99 saturns. i heard that sound once on a 94 when i accidentally hooked a charger up backwards. I do not know how you managed to replace it without knowing what it was, makes no sense to buy and install a part and not know what it is.

Your radio and most of your accessories will still work with a low charged battery. The clicking sound you are experiencing is most likely from a low charged battery not giving enough amperage to the starter. Were you able to start the car after getting a boost? If so, then it is your battery. Does your car cut out while driving? If so, then it is your alternator (device that charges your battery while the car is running). It is either the battery or alternator.

93 Saturn Sl Electrical Issues ?

test your alternator voltage it should be at least 13.25 volts. sounds like its not putting voltage back into your battery. if all is well have your battery load tested at parts store.

Car started fine..stopped, no restart, no click, dead lights on.

try getting a boost for your car.... the battery may be failing. it doesn't take alot of power to turn on the lights... but a huge drain on the battery to start it. if it will not start with a boost i could very well be that the starter has failed. as you attempt to start it... have someone tap the starter with a hammer. if it starts... replace the starter.... if it starts normally with a boost you likely need a new battery

Dead battery

The clicking sound you hear when you turn the key is the starter solenoid trying to apply voltage to the starter. Try this, if you can see the starter tap it with a hammer and then try to start the car. this is an emergency make do.

The solenoid is a heavy duty relay that is capable of switching the high current requirements of the starter (up to 70 - 100 amps).

If it's clicking its closing. By the way a new starter will come with a new solenoid

I just replaced my starter in my F-150 today for the exact same problem. Cost $100

Hope this helps Good Luck Loringh
