Why will it run with the vacume line off the map sencor

If the engine management system is working, the engine should stay running but perhaps run rough because pulling the vacuum line off tells the computer to really richen up the mixture.

What does map sencor do andhow to test it 1998 olds cutlass

Usually the map sensor is on top of the intake near the firewall. The sensor measures manifold vac.
You would use a scanner to "watch" the sensor reading as the vac changes.

Idles ok but when you give it gas it wants to die. sputters and looses power. we changed the sencores and the fuel filter. what else should we do

Has it had a recent tune-up? It is important for the spark plugs and wires to be in good shape. It is also important for the air filter to be clean. What sensors did you replace?

If the mass air-flow (MAF) or manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensors are bad, it can cause this issue because the computer doesn't know how much fuel to add if it doesn't know how much air the engine is getting. This can also be a result of a bad throttle position sensor (TPS) because the computer doesn't know how much demand you are putting on the throttle (how far you are pushing the gas pedal) so doesn't know how rich to make the fuel mixture. If any of these sensors have gone bad they usually set a code in the computer. Even if the check engine light isn't on, there could be a pending code in the computer that can be found with a hand held scanner. Auto Zone will read the codes for free or if you can't drive it, you can rent or buy the scanner yourself. Be sure to write down the codes you get and post them here. If you are able, you can also test the fuel pressure. Low fuel pressure can cause the issues you are having too.

My dodge stratus stalled and wont start

Check the MAP sensor. This measures the air pressure in the maniforld. It is commonly mounted on a fender, low cost and easy to replace.

To test, unplug the electrical connection from the MAP sensor. If it starts, replace the sensor.

Ok my 1991 honda civic now starts but wont run very long unless you are giving it gas but you cannot put it in drive without the car cutting off everything under the hood is new and within the specs they...

It sounds like the map sencors may be your problem, Take a look at all the wire cuplers that are around the fuel injection area they may be soft set. You will need to gently but firmly squeeze them together, Because if they are soft set you will then here a clicking sound. Just so you know the map sencor controls your fuel going to the injection system.
