Question about 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Heater will not switch from dashboard vent no matter where I the 'switch'. It does cut out for a split second like it recognizes the change? so I don't think it is a simple physical break in the slide switch.

That may be so or it may be a vacume line.

All my heater vents blow air when heat is on, but only the front gets warm air...all rear vents only blow cold air no matter how you have the heater set...not sure what the problem could be.


there is a diverter valve that lets hot water from the engine into a heater core, which is a device like a small radiator, which heats the air when it flows past. there is probably a second heater core for the rear. the valve for that one, or the switch or relay to control it is bad.

My jeep sometimes jumps out of first gear at take off? And also the vents wont change from vents to defrost position.


I had the same problem with the vents & it turned out that one of the vacuum hoses going to the dashboard control switches had a split in it. Once repaired, problem solved.

1997 Nissan 4 cylinder truck AC works excellent throwing snowballs cold air, then it will blow hot air. Relay switch and clutch has been replaced....Did not fix problem!


sounds like compressor isn't working properly or heater vacuum is opening vent to heater core.try turning on ac and if it cuts on and off repeatedly every few seconds the freon level is not correct or high pressure switch may not be working make sure radiator fan comes on when ac is on.if all this is working properly check vacuum hoses to heater may be opening vent doors to heater.hope this helps

Heater does not work


Seems like very little volume of water is reaching the heater core in the dashboard. Check the hoses that run from the cooling system into the firewall. One of these hoses might be bent or creased in a position that it impairs the normal flow of hot water into the dashboard.

Switch on dashboard does not change air direction to flow & vents


Defrost is the default mode so if the system fais, you alays have defrost. The mode doors are controlled by vacuum motors. I would suspect a vacuum leak in the engine compartment on the hose going from the engine through the firewall and into the heater controls. Some systems have a vacuum storage canister that can also leak. The canister stores vacuum when vacuum drops going up a hill.
Or, you have a bad heater control head that is not passing vacuum to the vacuum motors on the mode doors.

sounds like heater core you will have to pull dash up and remove heater assembly to replace heater core it is a big job not for the faint of heart good luck

1992 240 Gl, Windshield air vent/defroster has almost no output


wow...here it is spring and no one answered either of you? Is there a large volume of air when fan is on high? Where is it going? Or do you not hear anything from the fan? The 240 has an awesome heater. On high it would heat a small home! If no sound, your blower motor is dead assuming the fuse is good. If you hear the fan blowing, figure out where the air IS going. Note that the only way to turn the dash vents off is with the white Oreo dials. To defrost, only that button should be pressed in and dash vents off. Behind the dash switches there is a maze of short vacuum hoses. Often times, people monkey w/ these and reconnect them incorrectly. Haynes manual or Chilton's have proper diagrams. It could be that the vacuum hose coming from the manifold and entering the firewall is split on the under side and not visible, also.

Honda Civic 2002 1.7, when driving the car, it's seems like the car switches off for a split second and the engine management light shows for the split second. The rev counter drops. When cutting out...


Check all the wires. Especiality the ground wire.
Battery terminal.
And grounds mounted on the intake.
Normally when no codes are present, Is a lost of electrical power.
