Question about 1988 Ford F 250

1 Answer

My 1988 Ford F-250, 7.3 diesel will sometimes start and run for a small period of time like there is air in the fuel line. Sometimes it starts great and sometimes it starts as if I would have run out of fuel. This happens even when the fuel tank is full. Could it be a type of checkvalve somewhere in the fuel line that is not working properly?

Sounds like the fuel pump. Turn the key on, but dont try to turn over engine, and have someone stand by the fuel tank and listen for a humming sound. It will only last a second or two. Check your fuel filter also, it could be clogged up.

1988 BMW 325 2.7L; starts sometimes, sometimes not; runs great, then dies randomly. Just not dependable. Coil tested OK and Fuel pump runs fine (isolated test) what next?

Check the wiring and the lines first. INspect the fuel filter. It may have some loose vacuum lines or worn out ones. Check the idle air control valve and the MAF sensor in the intake it may need some cleaning. If you can, have a scanner connected to the car. Some shops would let you borrow their scanner. The error would help identify the issue more accurately.

Diesel 1989 F-250 set too long and will roll over

You may have to bleed the fuel system. There may be a very small air leak in the fuel supply line and after a long time idle, the fuel seeps bac into the tank, leaving an air lock in the pipe. When you go to start, this air makes its way into your injection pump & needs to be bled out before the engine will start. Begin from your fuel filter bleed valve, next the injection pump using the primer pump to transfer the fuel. Next loosen off the injector pipes and crank the engine over until fuel sprays form all the joints. Tighten injector pipes and start. It may run a bit rough for to begin with, but will soon even out. If it doesn't start, repeat bleeding of injectors.

My son ran my truck out of gas. Its a 1988 F250

first, is this a diesel? if it is there is a line or oring loose allowing it to **** air--diesels dont like leaks like that and there is a whole procedure for voiding the air from the lines on diesels. next could be the in tank pump and also does it have duel tanks? does the duel tank switch work? running out of fuel with in tank pumps can burn up the pump (the fuel itself provides lubrication and cooling for the pump, gas or diesel) and of course check the filter, running out and refilling could have disturbed trash in the tank

1985 diesel after sitting overnight will not start

The check valve is a small brass fitting where the return line attaches to the filter head. I believe it takes a 7/16" wrench. There is a 'duck bill' inside that prevents fuel from leaking back to the tank causing air in the system. It should allow flow in only on direction. Some times you can see light through it if it's bad enough. Also, the lines between the injectors can dry out and start to leak air. Air will leak in before fuel leaks out, and you won't see it. There are plastic, cup-shaped connectors for these hoses that press onto the top of each injector. They are sealed by two o-rings on each injector body where it meets the connector. These o-rings can dry out and also leak air and fuel. Your Ford dealer or diesel service professional should have the proper o-rings. Any other o-rings might not seal, as they won't be the exact size. You already changed the fuel solenoid when you replaced the pump. It is inside. There has to be battery cranking voltage to it while cranking, and battery voltage with key in 'on' position. The wire attaches to the top of the pump. This is not likely to be the problem, since it restarts every 2 hours.

check the o2 sensor, throttle body, vaccum lines, that timing and spark is correct and working on all cylinders( broken plug or wires), try the module on the distributor sometimes that can do it to but usally it runs good then gets bad as engine warms, to me is sounds like timing which also could be in the valvetrain or in the chain and gears in front... hopefully this gets you started in the right direction
