Question about 1997 Pontiac Sunfire

2 Answers

1997 pontiac sunfire - I'm hearing a clunking noise occassionally - could be from the front right side, could be from the back right side of the car. Noise has been heard when changing from reverse or park to drive, also when accelerating from a full stop. What could the noise be? Thanks!

Sounds like poss dog bone mount from engine to frt cross member worn or bolts loose, poss ball joint or tie rod, also strut mounts on this car also makes noise sometimes more after driving after awhile

Could be a bad c/v joint on the end of the drive axle but can also be just about any of a number of things. You need to get under there and do a good visual inspection. If the rubber boot on the joint is split or torn it's a safe bet that the joint has failed.

Clunking noise comming from front

check your lug nuts first. if there tight jack the front of the car off the ground, then wiggle the tire left to right and up and down. if you have any play then your wheel bearings are out. if you dont have play then reach around to where your front wheel drive axle attaches and wiggle it in the same fassion. you should have your answer when you do this to both sides

I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L. If the catalystic converter is beginning to go, what noise if any, will I hear.

The catalytic converter will sound like it's full of rocks if the core has broken apart.Thump it with a rubber mallet(or your hand IF IT's COLD),should be pretty obvious.

Everytime i turn the steering wheel i hear a loud clunking noise, i know its not the strut mounts, i know both tie rod ends are brand new within the past year plus they dont make a clunking noise like...

clunking noise may be bad steering rack. either the bolts that hold it to the frame may have worked loose, the center of your vehicle is where the steering racks located, just under the center of floorboard.under dash but on floorboard.make sense? try turning the steering wheel with engine running, place your hand under the radio, but on floorboard, when you turn the steering wheel from side to side,do you feel a thump? if so,then your steering racks loose or bad. the only way to know for sure is to have someone who knows about the steering rack to inspect it visually. thank you for choosing fixya.com

My Sunfire makes a loud noise from the front right side when I make a left hand turn. Whats the problem?

Usually, a loud clicking noise is indicative of a bad axle. You could also have a loose/damaged wheel bearing.

I own a 1997 pontiac sunfire back right tire locking.

It seems that the backing plates are dirty and not allowing the brake shoe to return to it's proper position, rust builds up while not in use and causes the wheel to lock

Hearing clunk noises after going over bumps on the road..

Check the front struts ( shock absorber ) If original or very old, they are doing no good. Also check the front TORSION BAR rubber bushings. In low temps will groan and creak, on up and down motions.

2003 Pontiac Grand Am SE 4 Door (Steering Clunking Noise)

Had the same problem. PONTIAC has issued a TSB that dealer know about. The Engine is MIS-ALIGNED and needs add'l rods to be installed to fix this problem. This will be done AT YOUR EXPENSE. I found this out the hard way.
Best of Luck
