The glow plugs are situated in the head of the engine and project down into the perch amber. On the outside of the head you will see where the diesel lines and the injectors are, and next to them, connected by a solid flat bar, are the glow plugs. These can burn out, but the usual problem is the relay which is there to switch the very heavy current needed, some 80 amps, when the glow pugs are instructed to turn on, I.e. when the coolant temperature is under 50degrees Celsius. This means that the glow plugs continue to work until the engine reaches a certain heat.
Test connect a multimeter to the flat bar and turn the key on on a cold engine, first start of the day, and see if the light comes on in the dash, the one with the curly symbol, and see if voltage is present at the flat bar linking the glow plugs. No lamp lighting, then you have problems with the sensing system or the timer. Lamp lights, no voltage at the glow plug...then you have problems with the relay not switching on. Replace relay and drive on....
