Question about 1998 Audi A4

1 Answer

I have just bought an Audi A4 1.8 auto 1998, which has been stood for over a year. It was running fine before being parked up, but now the tick over fluctuates between 400 and 700 rpm. Once the accelerator is press slightly its fine and runs really smooth. Can you help?

Possibly bad gas try adding some fuel additive to it, seafoam works the best and possibly fill it up with fresh gas.

Google it - Check this LINK. If your horn or other steering wheel controls do not work, it's likely the clockspring - the device that transmits the inputs from the steering wheel into the wiring harness under the dash. Pray it's not, otherwise your Audi tech will be buying himself a new S4.

Is there a swtich to turn off the parking lights in a Audi 98 A4?

Your stalk controls the indicators and the parking light, if you turn the engine off and the stalk is in either the left or right turning signal position your parking light remains on, this will also send a signal from the dash to remind you the light is on, I would say that the turning signal stalk needs replacing.

as the mot only says the "brakes work"to a certain efficiency,(the tester does NOT check the depth/thickness of the pads),chances are your pads/discs are in need of replacement.the pads have sensors in them for wear depth, so when checking the pads, front AND rear the abs sensors can be cleaned, and if done by a seat/skoda/vw/audi dealer they can put it on the diagnostic computer to give you a definative answer (this is cheaper than guessing) I replace the pads myself but get the car "diagnosed"when any red light shows.

Conventional oil is fine - you don't need synthetic. 5W30 oil will do fine year round.

1998 Audi A4 2.8 won't start

Does the clicking happen when you try to start the car? If so, the battery may be flat, try to jump or bump start the car. If the clicking occurs when running, check oil level, if this is ok there maybe engine damage. Do not run and seek advise from a garage.
