Question about Ford Taurus

Ford Taurus 1998 3.0 engine v6 How do I check the wiring that plugs into the alternator? The plug has 3 wires. I do not know what they do so not sure if when checking if engine needs to be running or off or what is ground and what is power. I do know the main red wire going to alternator has power. #1(orange & gray stripe? This wire is a little heavier gage than the other 2) #2(White with black stripe this wire loops back into the alternator with a plug) #3(green with black stripe?) Alternator bench test good, but when on car it shows bad. Battery test good. Fuse test good with ohm meter. Test battery with volt meter engine off about 12 volt. Test battery with engine running the same voltage. Put one test lead on neg post on battery and other touching red main wire on alternator same voltage about 12 volts. The reason aims saying about 12 volts because using cheap volt ohm meter with small lines.

Need to know how to check each individual wire at plug to make sure there they are working properly.

Testing the amperage output of the alternator is good for measuring the amount (not the level) of voltage the alternator can produce. This test can be tricky because if the alternator is weak it can still show it as producing amperage. Which is good, but if the voltage is low, it will still allow the battery to go dead. To check the amperage output of an alternator an amp meter is needed. Once the meter is connected start the engine. Next turn on all electrical accessories and raise the engine idle to about 1200 RPM. The alternator should output the max amperage it was designed to produce. Example: a 90 amp alternator should output about 88 amps. Note: An alternator cannot sustain maximum output for long periods of time. If the alternator is forced to operate at maximum output it will overheat and fail. An alternator is designed to operate at max amperage output only for a reasonable amount of time.

((Connect the voltage meter lead the same way you would in a battery static voltage check, Start engine (do not drive) at engine idle the voltage should be between 13.6 to 14.3 volts. If not the alternator may need replacing.)))

How do I wire a alternator for a 2000 Ford taurus

should have a large guage wire from back of alternator to post on battery. then there is a connector that needs to be plugged in. if the wiring connector is gone, you will need to buy a new connector for the alternator and wire it. best to buy chilton manual to find wiring diagram to know which wire goes to what terminal

I have a 1998 ford taurus the check engine light blinks and it doesnt want to pull up the hill.

When the CEL flashes you can damage the catalytic converters. Usually their are multiple misfires. The most likely cause is ignition, spark plugs, spark plug wires, ignition coils etc.

1999 Ford Taurus 3.0L V6 24V DOHC Duratec Engine Engine was misfiring, plugs replaced, KAM erased, Idles Slow and Rough. OBDII says misfire ocurring on cyl 4 & 5. Codes P0300, P0304 and P0305

i would check the plug wires and the coils you check the plug wires for bad spots at night start the motor up and look at the plugs if you see a spark arch out the wire and to a peace of metal then the plug wires need to be replace.

Correct firing order/plug wires/distributor cap

If it's the 3.0L V6 Vulcan or Duratec engine the firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6. The rear bank cylinder head is 1-3 with 1 on the passenger side and 3 on the driver's side. The front bank cylinder head is 4-6 with 4 on the passenger side and 6 on the driver's side.

My 2002 taurus dohc runs rough at idle, worse if i turn ac on!

The a/c makes it worse because you are asking the engine to pull a load missing one cylinder. If you have alternate transport or like working on a hot engine you can take number 3 wire to the autoparts and get one wire to match length. You may want 1 plug in case wire doesn't help.

Huge Coolant Leak

It is most likely the cylinder block core plug at the rear of the engine, there was a recall to repair corrosion in the cooling system I think in 96, but they still rusted up allot, saw many new cars with rusted core plugs leaking. Press test the system on a lift, if that core plug is leaking you will have to pull out parts, most likely the transmission to get at it.
