Question about 1995 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

No back up lights

When I press on the brake pedal the "R" light for the automatic transmission lights up. This happens no matter what gear I am actually in. The brake lights are working however. Also, the back up lights do not work.

Please help.

Tip

My car is stuck in gear.

Hi.

If we are talking about automatic transmission stuck in park position, then the problem is the solenoid switch that unlocks the gear shift lever when brake pedal is pressed. The switch is located behind the brake pedal.
When the problem is the solenoid the brake lights usually do not work.
A definitive test on the switch is done by jumping the switch contacts to bypass the brake pedal switch.

If the brake pedal switch is not the problem, or if an automatic transmission is stuck in a different gear, then the first step in troubleshooting is scanning the ECU (car computer) for codes. If there is a code P0700 stored, that means that more codes are stored in the TCM (transmission control module). The TCM is the computer module controlling the transaxle, and can be tested at any authorized garage. See: I get code p0700 after an OBDII scan.
There are many possible reasons for automatic transmission malfunctions. Most common reasons (that can also cause lock in one gear) are discussed here:My car does not shift in second gear.
If you are lock in park, check the pedal switch and brake lights as a first thing.

If you have a manual transmission stuck in any gear, it is usually the gear shaft broken or detached from the hub. In that case the gear shaft must be replaced.

Why does my truck only go into gear sometimes and no brake lights

Year/make/model?? Most probable cause of this would be a defective brake switch as this switch controls the brake lights as well as the shift release solenoid

My scenic megane will start but only if clutch pedal is depressed (not brake pedal), and as soon as brake is applied when running, it stops. What is the matter with it?

Sounds like you have a standard transmission if it has a clutch.
Start requires the clutch to be pressed in for safety reasons.
If you have it in gear when you press the break the engine
will stall without your feathering the clutch. Sounds like you may not have learned how to drive a standard transmission car yet.
Otherwise there's a short between the clutch safty switch and the brake light circuit.

Manual??

You broke something in the transmission.

Automatic?

Is the fluid full?
Check the wires to the transmission to make sure they are not damaged.
Is the engine Light on? have you scanned for codes?

There is no magic fix for cars / trucks, I need as much info as possable

Where to find a automatic transmission neutral switch the break lights dont work

Hi!!

The neutral safety switch is not part of the break light circuit, is part of hte reverse lights circuit.

Here is a picture of the switch, is located under the dash on top of the steering column. Cost $25 available at most autopart stores.

c8532be.jpg This is the StopLight switch $15 available at most autoparts stores.
This switch is located on top of brake pedal and is hot at all times, when you press the brake pedal, the lights should come on, it does not matter if the key is On or Off.

Good Luck!! Don't forget to rate this port!!

Car starts, but won't go into gear. Just replaced

It might be your brake light switch under the brake pedal. If it is not coming out fully when you press your brake pedal, your brake lights will not come on and the car will not go into gear. It's an inexpensive repair that you can easily do yourself in minutes. I tried spraying WD40 in mine first, but it only lasted about 2 weeks and I ended up replacing it anyway. The part is only about $14, so it's best to replace it.

have you checked the brake lights for operation ?
if they don't work than it is your brake light switch located on the pedal support bracket.
