The engine is consuming anti-freeze and is being burned in the combustion chamber. There is a TSB bulletin below that can cause your particular problem. There is also a possibility of intake gasket problems as well as other issues that could cause the problem.

Technical Service Bulletin Number : 99086 - Head bolts loose, leaking coolant.
Is the engine running smoothly, no miss fire problems? Is the service engine soon light on?
Let me know.
Regards,

Hi Ejavon,

White smoke is indicative of coolant finding its way into the cylinders.

You may have noticed a loss of power.

Check your oil, is it clear or has it developed a white froth?

You need to have a compression check done on the engine to find out if the head gasket has failed.

Comment back with what you find out

I cant confirm on this site but it sure sounds like a blown head gasket.

If your losing coolant and you have white smoke check for water in your oil , possibly blown head gasket and should overheat pretty fast

Well I'd say that coolant is definitely leaking into the combustion chamber, albeit at a slow rate (for now). It could be anything from a blown head gasket to a cracked block or head. I'd get it to a shop as soon as possible and not drive it any more than need be until that point.

Besides being a poorly worded question...
We can try...
White smoke from the tail pipe could be a blown head gasket as coolant enters your cylinders and is exhausted.

"hole in overdrive" needs clarified...

I have a 1998 forester with 2.5 DOHC just installed a new wrecking yard motor, it now blows a gigantic white cloud of smoke from exhaust. any chance theres an easy fix?

Coolant getting into engine Most likely a blown head gasket.
Put your hand in the cloud of exhaust at tailpipe for a few seconds, lick you damp hand. Yewks' sweet taste is antifreeze

While my tail pipe blows out white smoke

Whatever you do, do NOT continue driving it this way until it is fixed. Hydraulic lockup can bend a piston rod ot even detonate the engne.
I think it got so hot at one point that it blew a head gasket.
Have a qualified mechanic perform a cooling system Pressure check.
If it holds pressure, which I doubt, it may be antifreeze running into your cylinders from he intake manifold. But the pressure test should tell you which head gasket it is, but have BOTH replaced, since they both underwent the stress.AND while replacing those gaskets, a new intake gasket will be installed too, as a matter of course. The price is about the same, since they have the top of the engine apart anyway. Just for information: White "smoke" is vaporized coolant or water being pushed out the tailpipe from the engine. Blue "Smoke" is oil, and Black "smoke" is soot- too much unburned fuel.

Started white smoking and losing a little coolant. Not getting in oil. no power lose. no sign of leaking.

if you are losing coolant and and producing white smoke from the tailpipe you have the classic sign of a bown head gasket. usually this smoke is accompanied by a bitter sweet odor. most common causes are severe engine overheating or severe misfire(flashing check engine light). take the car in for a diagnosis.

ity sounds like the electric fan is not turning on, if it is only overheating at idle (sitting still) and is not overheating when driving, but any good shop should have already determined this. open the hood while idling, and watch to see if the fan by the radiator turns on when idling, and the temp is going up. if the fan is indeed working, then it may be the head gasket, or it may be a slow-to-open thermostat.

if it is the head gasket, you should notice one of the following symptoms: smoke out the tailpipe- usually white, green or red (depending on your type) coolant dripping from the tailpipe at start-up, murky or bubbly oil from coolant leaking into the oil, or an oily film on top of the coolant from oil leaking into the coolant. a clear water drip from the tailpipe is normal, form condensation, but if the drip is the color of your coolant, then you definitely have a head gasket issue.

I would keep an eye closely on the oil and coolant. You want to make sure the coolant is not getting into the combution chamber. (Due to a bad head gasket or a crack) Normally white smoke is due to coolant mixed with oil, but...some moisture will look white for a couple seconds when cold. So... keep a good eye on fluids, and if you see a level going down, get it checked out.

Clouds of white smoke

its normal it just a moisture in your piping which causing to smoke that way...but if the smoke still when normal driving you might check the reservoir for cloudy water instead of coolant in that case you may have a blown head gasket if you got luck but if no cylinder or head are crack..anyways do not worry about white smoke you must worry if you have black smoke

do you have a cloud of white smoke out of the tail pipe?

Dec 23, 2008 | 1999 Cadillac DeVille

1 Answer

White smoke

The smoke must come from a coolant leak close to the radiator, or a fin crack in the radiator itself. Check all hoses and clamps, idle hot and look for smoke. You may have a heater core corrosion issue, watch close for coolant leaks on the floor mats inside, all of this may be connected and look for leaks where you park. Just a small amount can produce smoke, open the hood when it smokes and look.
