2002 Acura MDX Navi won't spin-up or release the DVD w/o display

2002 Acura MDX Navi base unit won't spin up its DVD and will not release the DVD via button behind door, but I think the display unit may be totally dead and unable to communicate via the data link. Is this a built-in security feature to protect the DVD from thieves if the base unit is removed from the car? Or, does this indicate that the DVD base unit is broken also? I checked inside the base unit, and the circuits have proper power and seem active (with o'scope, I can see it pulsing signals onto the data link).

Can't enter the security code; display unit is totally dark/dead. Power is good inside the base unit, I have not checked inside display yet. Both units have power to the connectors (power does not go through from one to the other, it is fed to both separately). Question is whether base unit is designed to "act dead" if it thinks it has no display connected.

Tried all that; have completely removed & reinstalled base unit, ran base unit stand-alone on test bench, etc. No change. I'm mainly trying to figure out if base unit is behaving as would be expected if it can't communicate with a dead display unit, or if it should still release the DVD all by itself.

I have all the codes, but navi is totally dead and I'm trying to figure out if I need to replace the display, the base, or both. If the base should definitely release the DVD when it is disconnected from the display, then it must be dead. I'm looking for someone who knows whether the base should do anything at all when disconnected from the display.

It seems to be the correct advice.

Its not the base problem its the display problem.if the base is disconnected from the display it will not work.because its the display which gives command to the base.if the display is not working nothing will get supported.but it can also happen if the whole unit is dead.so first its necessay to replace the display.that will clear the doubt.if still after replacing the display nothing works that means whole unit is dead so base also needs replacement.but if base is ok then after replacing display it will start supporting as you give any command.

My 2002 Nav unit went dead at about the same time. Just prior to dying, it was in a constant re-set mode. The display is dead. The Nav unit does not spin up the DVD. But, the DVD *does* get ejected when the button is pressed. Any thoughts on what *I* should try? Thanks!

My 2002 MDX Navigation system had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. At first it was having problems reading the DVD (it kept re-initializing the unit). I was driving for a while, so I couldn't play with it for a while, but then all of a sudden, the display unit went blank. I *was* able to release and insert the DVD, but everything else on the Nav unit seemed to be dead. A few days ago I was going to pull out the Nav unit, so I disconnected all of the wires plugged into the back of the unit. Before I unbolted the unit, I decided to plug them all back in and turn the system on again. It actually came back up. The Display came on, and the Nav unit was able to (slowly) read the DVD. It had problems reading the DVD when I tried it a few more times, but at least the display was on (so that I could use the AC/heater funtions). I had an older DVD that I tried, but it was unable to read that one, so I think the Nav unit is having trouble reading DVDs. But by unplugging all of the connectors, I was at least able to get the display unit back on. I'm going to try one of those DVD cleaner discs, just in case there is something that can be cleaned out in the unit, which might be preventing the system from being able to properly read the DVDs. Hope this might help in your situation.

Quick fix would be to remove power from the unit for about 10 minutes or so. you can either pull the fuse for it or unhook the battery. be aware MAKE SURE you have the security codes to activate the unit again as well as the code for the radio.

Some units do have the security feature and you get write down your s/n number and dealer will give you free code to unlock your unit. The red light I believe would be on. If you are getting power to each capacitor and resistor and data cable, then both units should be good. Do make sure power goes through and from base and to and through display.

If all your unit is getting power and there is no lights on, not even a security light, then there is probably a bad capacitor somewhere in the circuit for lights and display. Check to see if your dimmer switch needs to be attached.

Check your oil pressure switch located next to the oil filter. Sounds like that will need to be replaced.

I had posted the similar problem with my 2002 Navi. It turned out to be a bad DVD/base unit. Unfortunately, just about all of the advice posted here was incorrect. The DVD unit is basically a complete computer and it sends raw video signals to the display unit just like a PC sends video to an LCD display; when the computer dies or is off, the display goes blank. So, any problems with sluggish or unusual behavior indicates the base unit is going bad. In my case, it was so dead that it couldn't event eject the DVD - I had to literally take the DVD drive apart to get my disc out. I bought a used Navi DVD base unit online from "acurahondatech" on eBay. This guy was great; he helped me diagnose the problem and found the right unit to work with my model MDX. I highly recommend him.

Acura MDX Navigation system is intermittent. Need to remove it to send to Alpine for repair. Can't find instructions.

its really easey to remove the dvd unit under the pasenger seat. just put the seat all the way forward and pull the plastic guard from the seat track (pull straight back) then unplug the harness connectors in the back of the unit.
Then put the seat all the way back and remove the 1o mm nuts on the side brackets of the unit and pull it forward.

Heres what you should do:
1. Start up vehicle.

2. Hold down buttons: MENU + MAP/GUIDE + CANCEL for 5 seconds, (the "Select Diagnosis items" screen will appear) then do the following:

3. Hold down only MAP/GUIDE (again) for 5 seconds (A screen with a "Complete" button, will appear).

4. Tap the "Complete" button on screen, and then the "Return" button.

5. Restart vehicle. Everything will work! That screen won't popup anymore! =)
