Question about 2001 Honda Passport

1 Answer

I need a diagram for an intake for a 2001 honda

I need this to pass emisions in about thirty days. I have already changed the EGR vale but the check engine light is on and the next step is the intake. Need to take it apart and clean the carbon build up off to make the air flow free again

    I need to take the intake off and i am trying to see how hard this is for this certain vehicle. If i take the intake and throttle body off to clean all air ports then hopefully it will pass emisions. The code says not enough air flow bad egr valve. I have already replaced this piece twice but it wont pass emisions.

Just wanted to make sure we were on same page with thiis. They (honda) actually has a service update for this,(and several other vehicles,both honda and acura side).Have you called local dealership to see if they repair under emissions extension warranty?After working for Honda for so lon i can probably tell you that even though its at end of warranty limit if you scream loud enough they "will" cover it for you. Its been a big problem (intake ports clogging shut with carbon sludge.)just be firm,point out you understand its a huge common problem! I'll dig up the service bulletin for you just in case which goes through the repair step by step.Theres not alot to it actually,its a matter of disconnecting cables from throttle body(or take it loose from intale and lay aside,a few connectors,intake bolts,then once off just flip over and the port is very obvious. about 3/4 inch port and will plugged solid,you will have to drill through buildup to remove(itssolid!)and clean with lots of carb cleaner!port on engine is usually fine.Nnow part of update is a sleeve that drives into port once drilled out(prevents carbon from sticlking to sides of port.you can buy from honda, i reccomend it if you do this yourself.i'll be back in touch w/info. do try and get Honda to cover that way it dosnt cost you.&if they do agree to do,they will have to reimburse you for $ spent on egr stuff youve bought

Honda passport 1994 4wh drive cant pass smog test. i change the catalytic converter, change the egr valve, 02 head sensor and major tune up, spark plugs, wires are all change still cant pass smog. i passed...

Here are a few things to look at:
Have you replaced the air filter? Have a compression test done on the engine, could possibly be a leaking vale. If any vacuum hoses have been removed from the engine they will have to be re-installed. Solid Lifters out of adjustment can cause incomplete combustion. Make sure engine is reaching proper operating temperature (eg. thermostat). Do not use low grade (octane) fuel for test.
Clean oil, tire pressure, brake drag?, every little thing counts.

Engine emisions light in something to do with air intake heater sensor. where would I find this on engine and does anyone know how to get a diagram.

Assuming you mean intake temperature sensor it will be mounted on the snorkel tube from the air cleaner to the intake.

Check for

vacuum leaks on intake manifold,

the air tube between the air filter.

intake manifold vacuum hose.

===
clean throttle plate with Berryman carburator cleaner

SEE sample picture HERE
===

Also remove carbon built up behind the EGR valve and the EGR passage tube.

===

Vacuum leak WILL offset the intended 14.7 to 1 air fuel ratio.

More un-metered air (leaks) will lean out the fuel mixture.

Use small amount of Berryman carb clearer at potential air leak area will help you identify trouble spot.

At idle,just spray and listen for the RPM surge.

The in-rush of carb clearer will increase the RPM on the motor.

Record the problem spot(s) and address it later.

===

EGR carbon built up require 2+ hours to clean from start to finish.

You will need a new EGR base gasket before your start.

Locate and remove the EGR valve after the vehicle is cool down.

Carefully record the connector and vacuum line (for older vehicle) location by drawing an easily to follow diagram.

Remove the EGR valve.

Inspect the location of the carbon built-up inside the valve and the EGR passage tube.

SOAK these areas with WD-40 spary.

You will need a small screwdriver,cloth hanger and lot of newspaper and time to get this cleaning done right.

RE-SOAK the carbon and let it sit for over-night will also help.

One the last round,pass a shop vacuum of the EGR valve and the passage pipe.

Install the new EGR gasket and connectors.

Allow the vehicle to warm up outdoor to burn up any remaining WD-40.

Take it for a test drive.

I HAVE A P1491 CODE ON MY 1998 HONDA ACCORD ERG

Code P1491 is EGR lift insufficient. It is usually accompanied by P0401. If you have a v6 Accord, there was a recall for the EGR port plugging. Check with your Honda dealer to see if your car is covered under that recall. If you have a 4 cyl, plan on replaceing the EGR. In addition, you need to clean the ports in the engine on the intake and exhaust sides of the EGR ports. To do this, spray some carb/choke//intake cleaner into the ports to saturate the black exhaust build-up. Later, jam a coat hanger or spare dipstick (or some long flexible metal rod) into the parts to break up the black deposits. When your rod passes through easily, spray more cleaner to pass it through. Reassemble and start the engine. It will run rough at first, so you need to give it gas pedal input to burn off the carb cleaner. You should be good to go.
